Cutting a rope gasket...

OK folks, help a brother out. Picked up 10 foot of rope gasket for the FB door today. Going to need to cut it down some. How does one go about trimming it without it fraying? Next question....if fraying is un-avoidable what is done on the ends to minimize it?

Should I add just a bit in length and let it burn til it is good and tight on the ends?
