When I had my fish tanks running. I bought what the store called a blue lobster. I'm pretty sure it was just a crawfish injected with a blue dye, and your right. It could escape with ease.

No they are a real variant. I had one that I bought with eggs on the female and the babies where blue. There are also red and orange out there.

yeah none down here, only place I can get them is the aquarium section of the pet stores. I have kept them over the years, but they are escape artists in the tank, then the cat gets them...lol
Now that says it all…..the cat wanting its surf! The secret to keeping them in the trap is a bunch of bait…..have food they will have a party, no food the party is over!

Actually, blue crawfish are 1 in a million....it is a genetic recessive color change. We see them from time to time in crawfish sacks..

Wow. I've been through thousands of crawfish and never saw any meat come out of the claws! Nice looking traps. Our traps were much simpler and shallower.

Same with blue full size lobsters. They're supposed to be super rare, but it seems like I've been reading about at least one being caught for the last few years.

Well you learn something every day!!!!!!

These are Signal crawfish and known for large claws. We get meat out of about 80% of them. The combo of tails and claws is magic. When we want them this way I let them cool overnight in the fridge and then pull them cold. The boy wants to do a crawfish cocktail salad……I think that will happen in the future!
We used to see a lot of blues in N.E.Texas. Quite a few in Northern AZ as well.
Crazy, never seen one other than a pic!

Awesome meal. Where did you get the plans for making the traps?
Thanks, and no plans I just made them up…..they are modeled after the Procrasyster.com traps. I have two of them and would recommend them as the best made crawfish traps on the market. Their square trap is patented they make them about 20 mins up the road from my house…..I took their gate design and then blended it with the crab pot designs with multiple entrances. Ie crawls are aggressive so a large one can block others from getting in the trap. The other thing I did is put 1/2x1/2 mesh between the entrances points which are 1x1/2 so those points are more inviting for them…..

I’ve seen pics of lobsters that are blue….just a cool thing and not sure I could eat it……….but I might get over it if it was butter/cream poached in front of me…..

That is one fine looking meal there Civil!
Especially when you caught them!
Al
Many thanks Al, and yes being able to self-harvest them is a privilege we honor....I sure does up the satisfaction for sure!
