This may have been mentioned before, and if so, I apologize, but I did a quick search and didn't see it.

I buy all my charcoal from Costco. I use briquettes, so if you only use lump this may not be for you, but in the mailer of coupons we got the other day, there was a coupon for $3 off their Kingsford Compeition charcoal. They used to just have regular Kingsford, but the last couple times I've been this is what they had.

ANYWAYS, I went and got the 2 pack of the 15lb bags of charcoal (normally about $16) and then knocked the $3 off. I think the deal is good until next week if anyone wants to go take advantage!!

Now, what's the difference between the regular Kingsford and the competition stuff?

check out www.nakedwhiz.com

They have reivews on a lot of lump charcoal and also some comparisons on The Original Kingsford, before sure fire grooves, New Kingsford with Sure Fire Grooves, and Competition Kingsford.

You may have to look around a little bit or you can try the search feaure, pretty good reading.

Good luck. Andy

Thanks for the link, that was really interesting. I noticed the less "chemically" smell when I was firing up the smoker last time (this is my second time to purchase these particular briquettes).

I'm going to have to try lump charcoal, I think. Though, I would be more inclined to if Costco carried it, as that's where I get my meat from, and therefore where it's convenient to get the charcoal.

in a pinch, if I was out of lump I would use the Kingsford Competition briquettes, not the regular blue bag kingsford though.

I just dont see how you can go wrong with Royal Oak lump that you can get at Wal Mart. I have a Chargriller with SFB and a basket. i load the basket up with a piece of sheetmetal used to leave about 1/3rd open and then fire up half a chimney and dump it in then pull out the sheet metal. Get dialed in and (with little wind) i can run pretty smooth for 4 hours.

The only reason I haven't tried the lump is because of the unfamiliarity. When I was doing a brisket for the Super Bowl this year I got over 12 hours out of one load of these Kingsford Comp briquettes in my WSM. Now, it was a little overfull to start with, but it got the job done without having to reload it (though I did have to do quite a bit of stirring due to ash. Suprisingly, though, it held it without snuffing out my fire).

I only use lump charcoal, we have a place just 15 minutes from, that sells a huge bag, I think its 30 lbs., I don't remember cause I just threw out the empty bag, and have to go get more, but I only pay around $16 a bag
