Converting an old gas grill, looking for insights

I have this older (about 10yrs) Vermont Castings gas grill that is beyond it's uses (mainly due to a small flare up that got big enough to melt a bunch of pieces) and I am thinking, 'hmm... I wonder if it's convertible to a smoker' if I strip the guts out.

I was thinking a side box for wood, but I don't have a clue if it could even work given the open bottom where drippings fell as a gas grill?

Any experiences or insights would be appreciated.

i would say sealing it up to control air flow would be the hardest part other than that you could take off one of the side tables and mount a SFB there below the grates so that the smoke and heat rises up to the meat...Charbroil or Chargriller ( i cant remember witch) sells a small barrel looking grill for about $60 that converts to being a SFB for some of their grills. BUT IMO that grill is only good for a charcoal grill now but thats just to me...
