Cleaning the old smoker - yuk!

This morning I decided (perhaps not a great decision) to clean the grill.  I'm smoking a turkey breast tomorrow and this thing got pretty nasty over the last two years (as you can see).  After wire wheeling all the gunk off and out of it (included using a paint scraper and my fireplace poker to pry some of the crud out of the bottom!) I decided it needed some paint - a little rust here and there.  So, off to LOWES to get paint..., also bought a grill topper to put on the racks (which are also in pretty bad shape, but I'm having difficulty finding replacements - Medina Rivers has a website but I'm not getting replies to my queries). 

Looks pretty good now.  Didn't paint the entire inside - but gave the outside two good coats (Rustoleum High Heat formula).

Lots of work but glad I tackled it before putting that turkey in!!!  Pics show before and after.  Hard to believe I was cooking on that mess!

Yeah, don't paint the inside, ever.  Just need to re-season it with some PAM or cooking oil.  Spray it down real good, racks and all, heat it up for a couple hours to 300+ and you'll be good to go.

I just did the same thing to my Duo.  It was pretty nasty.  Was wondering how to go about the rust on the inside.  I was thinking of painting it.  Should I just wire brush it and coat it with oil?

Yes, wire brush or wheel the rust off then wipe her down with oil or simply spray it down with PAM.
