checking temp of little chief?

going to try making my first batch of jerky today. can I hang a candy thermometer off the grate inside the smoker, and will it give me a accurate reading or will the heat of the metal grate mess with the read out? What else would you suggest for smoker like this to use for a temp gauge, and how to install in correctly?

Yes you could do that. You can get cheap oven therms at most grocery stores that just sit on the rack.

I drilled a hole and inserted a dial therm in the door.....

dave i like that. I already built a inulated box for mine out of 1" think foam board with double sided foil. i will have to figure out something to work around that also.
