Checking In From MI

Hi All,

I'm new to the forums. I got my first smoker (Brinkman charcoal smoker) a little over 15 years ago. I was never quite happy with temperature control. I used it until it rusted through and then got rid of it when I moved several years ago. I have been charcoal grilling since, but decided to get back into smoking. I decided to purchase a Masterbuilt 30" electric smoker. I saw the great deal they had at Bass Pro Shop for Black Friday ($129). Even though I was out of town visiting family, I was lucky enough to have a friend who was willing to pick one up for me.

I can't wait to set it up and use it. Can anyone recommend any good rubs/sauces for a first smoke (in a long time)? I'm also going to grab some wood at one of the local stores to get me started.

I have started digging through the forums to get as much info as I can. Hopefully I will fire it up some time in the next week.

Welcome to the SMF. I would suggest taking the 5 day smoking basics course (it's free). Another suggestion would be to purchase the recipe for Jeff's rub and sauce. They're well worth the small amount invested.

Thanks Bassman. I just realized that there is a forum for newbies to check in. Hopefully a moderator can move my post to the correct forum.

Welcome Nick from a sunny Oregon! The MES for $130 is a great deal and I love my electric smoker (Royal Oak) and it has already turned out some great Q to include yesterday's turkey!

As for rubs and such, I built my own by combining a few and adjusting it here and there since I don't like mine too spicy. Like Bassman said, from what I hear the one from Jeff is pretty darned good too!

Thanks everyone for all the info.I have smoked meat for 20 or so years and every bit of it was trial and error. Spent the last 28 years in Houston and finally got a chance to move back home to Michigan so it's nice seeing people in Michigan here. I moved back last December and the neighbors looked at me like I was nuts smoking a pork roast while it was snowing. Come springtime they were joining me and are sold on smoking and I am sure I will see them continue through the winters to come.

Welcome aboard.  in addition to Jeff's rub, Head Country is an outstanding rub & sauce. Also Fast Eddies which is associated with Cookshack smokers. Available online. Of course you may want to develop your own over time.  Everything here is good friend.
