Greetings fellow smokers !!

I have not posted for a long while and figured I’m due. I just retired 3 weeks ago after 37 years of federal law enforcement. I am glad to put that chapter behind me and look forward to my next chapter.

I cooked a pork butt and some ribs today. The cook is not important because the food turned out fine. I wanted to talk about note keeping for your cooks (for those that do).

I generally use a word document and keeps simple notes for each of my cooks mainly so I do not have to remember but to also document any differences in cooks with same food. I used ChatGPT to document my cook today and had it create something quite fantastic.

For those of you who don't know, ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence language learning model.

I used voice dictation and had it create PDF guides and instructions on the cook for both the ribs and pork butt. In about 45 seconds, it summarized over 9 hours of cooking. I also uploaded my notes from previous cooks and it would cross reference those as well.

I plan on doing this from now on. I have attached the documents for your viewing pleasure.

Interesting. I have been using AI a lot more and like it. I dont log my cooks tho. Most of what I make I have made enough times that I can actually just remember how it goes.

Good idea tho!

I use it for developing recipes, you tell it what end result you want ,what ingredients you have on hand and it spits out a working recipe a person can tweek. Gets you close way faster. I have been trying to reproduce my moms ham bone potato soup she made when i was a kid. Plugged all the ingredients in that i remembered and damned if it did nail it on the first try.

I have done that as well. Mainly for sauces and rubs. It is pretty amazing to just type in the ingredients that you have on hand and it provides with a useful product.

I try to be the same way. I have all the bells and whistles (Fireboard, Meater, etc.). I have had my smoker long enough and cooked a great many things to where I only rely on my knowledge of past cooks and my Thermapen.

With voice dictation, I place the phone in my shirt pocket and just explain what the thermometer says and what the meat looks like. I also take pictures on occasion and throw in there. It also does a decent job of analyzing photos.

I am a little OCD when I cook and keep notes (especially if I nail something the first time). I just got a wild hair to use ChatGPT. I'm going to be cataloging all my cooks and see if this AI can pick upon nuances and maybe fix them.

Like money itself, AI may be a great "slave" but an awful "master".
Especially for something like cooking recipes, where the Internet is full of voluntarily-uploaded information, which gets "thumbs up" if good/true/valued, and push-back if otherwise, AI is quickly "learning" and proving itself a suitable global substitute to a local Subject-Matter Expert. That's great for the home hobbyist/cook, but if my livelihood is based upon being the SME at a local food preparation factory or restaurant (chef), this could significantly impact my future job and career prospects.
And there's the issue.
This may not be a major political issue in this year's November elections, but I think it will be by 2028.

Screw that, AI crap when it comes to cooking anything.
I'm amazed by what steps people will go through to try to simplify things. Maybe when AI can hand make me 200 ravioli, tamale, or cannoli shells I'll give it a try...nope!!!
Some things are better left alone, if it were too easy I'd make them all the time, and I wouldn't enjoy them as much as I do now. To each their own, but I'm sticking with old school. 90% of my cooking there are no recipes, it comes from my mind, failing, and tasting to prefect. No computer programs for me.

AI? Cooking ?
NOPE!
How does one know when its the right texture: Firm ,Tough ? Temp maybe ?
More importantly the personal flavor to finalize yur Masterpiece !

Back in the day I worked half a dozen kitchens solo.
300 to 500 tickets nightly.
AST. MGR : Helped as a Broiler cook @ a major Chain over 1K plates, mostly burgers and steaks.
No thermos, no timers,.
Just feeling the protein by touch and knowledge gained as time passes.
Point is I had almost NO REFIRED RETURNEDS !

F AI !

Knowing the basis of how AI works brings up a whole lot of concern for those who have been around the block a couple of times. Here you have a brand new toy that can 'do the work for you' albeit from the info acquired on the internet. Hmm... what could go wrong with that? IMO, it's the preamble to a slue of bad B-rated sci-fi movies but in this case it's going to effect real life!

Goldblum's line probably summed it up best: "...but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, that they didn't stop to think if they should"

For me all notes on each and every recipe attempt are added to my app "Paprika". Doing the work, making the notes and reviewing them is a excellent way to exercise one's mind to keep it sharp.

To each his own,use whatever works for you.Me personally I avoid AI at all levels.

I use a simple free recipe manager called Gourmand and that's it.

Some things are better left alone
Hand written history has worked so far . If it ain't broke ,,,

Glad you like using AI but I have gotten through life as long as I have without using it. My cell phone is off 95+ percent of the time and very few people even know the number. We still have a land line phone that every doctor has the number along with most people. I have it for calling the wife when I'm on the road, which isn't very often. I do have a digital camera, though. I have this laptop. My son always look on youtub any time he has to work on his vehicle. Me, I have factory manuals for my vehicles, though I usually only open them up to get torque specs because I am the one that maintains/repair them. Yes, I'm old school in so many ways and see no reason to change.

Just my opinion that isn't worth the 2 cents most folks the days are wouldn't care about.

I get all that way of the future . I avoided this thread , and now I'm in it .
Thing is that you ask someone a question these days and the first thing they do is get out their phone .
When the hands on generations are gone , what's left ?
Artificial intelligence , that's makes people's inteligence artificial ?

The absolute best recipes look just like that one, and you know they are legit, none of this A.I. bull shit with a great photo to generate "likes".

The only thing that sucks is a lot of my family recipes are very vaguely written, leaving out important steps, it's a dego thing. LOL!!!
The next time I'm over Mom & Pop's house I need to pull out Ma's recipe holder to go through them so I can ask her any questions I might have about them.

My family is not big on recipes, actually we suck at writing things down, most of our favorites have been hands-on with my Ma, Auntie's, uncle's, Noni, or Gramp's.
A lot of these family recipes will die with me, as we don't have kids, and my Nieces and nephews have zero desire to learn to cook.
(they will regret not paying more attention when they get older and everyone that cooked for them is gone).
I did the same thing when I was young, although I wanted to learn to cook at a pretty young age, as I hate crappy food.

My Dad's side of the family, the Irish side, weren't known for their cooking.
( they were known for their drinking and fighting) LOL!!!
I have exactly one recipe from Dad's Ma, it is her Irish soda bread, actually it's spotted dick, not traditional soda bread.
(It's our version of Americanized "soda bread").

Well...I didn’t think I was going to get my ass handed to me over a post. I would like to clarify in case I wasn’t clear. I am not using ChatGPT to make me a recipe from thin air or the from the cloud. As I stated, I keep written notes of all of my cooks and keep them on my computer. I normally use Microsoft word and type all of my notes from the various cooks.

For my last cook, I simply spoke into my phone and had it record all of my notes and then I had ChatGPT type out the results. After the results were put into a word document, I asked ChatGPT to make it look nice and presentable.

After that, I got a wild hair to upload all my previous cooks and have ChatGPT compare the differences of each cook. All of the information provided by ChatGPT was based on my input (past cooks). I am not using ChatGPT to smoke BBQ for me.

I am simply using it as a documentation tool. I was just trying to show how it can make documents and what they look like.

I knew what you were talking about, like usual my old ass A.D.D brain. Had to express my personal feelings about anything A.I.

If it works for you, that's awesome, I personally can't stand it, because too me it takes away from the personality of things. I'm old school, this new wave of A.I. drives me insane.

I didn't mean to come off like it was wrong, but rereading my post I can see why it was taken that way. I'm not very eloquent with words, which leads people to read in things that weren't my intention, sorry about that.

Dan.

I will own the using AI to create recipes. I just didn't think there was so much gatekeeping on this website. I am a very busy person, using a new technology to help out is a good thing in my opinion. We are all using computers right now to communicate with each other, why aren't you guys getting upset at that, do you drive vehicles, or wash clothes in a washing machine. I assume the gatekeepers here drive horses and buggies, and wash clothes on a rock down by the river. If im out of line fine, but this is why i stayed away from this site for so long. It used to be a free exchange of thoughts and information, but certain people on here just can't accept it.

If this terminates me from this site, fine, i am getting tired

Okay, this time what I'm about to say is exactly what I mean.
