Got a chance to work on it a little this week

Really nice looking smoke house! What are your plans for supporting the long rafters? I assume the vertical supports there now are only temporary.

Haven't had much time to work on the smokehouse the past couple weeks. I did manage to put the chimney on. I think it will work, we'll see. The firebox door I ordered cam in too.

I plan on sticking bolts through the mounting holes and mortoring them in between the firebrick and the outter bricks of the firebox.

Yea those are just temporary to keep the kids from putting too much weight on them. I will extend the roof over the smoke pipe and build a wood rack under it.

Nick, morning.... Smoke House is taking shape nicely.... that door is cool....   think about adding more eaves to the stack so the rain don't get into the smoker... and maybe some screen to keep the birds out too......    Hate to see bird droppings on the bacon.....  Dave

Oh man, you're right, didnt even think of the bird crap!  That would be bad!  I was planning on putting a larger one on to keep the rain out.  Thanks Dave.

Awesome man! Yeah the wife loves all me stuff too(sarcasm) but never complains when it's time to eat =)! lol. Question though, I'm curious to what hardware you used to fasten your boards together. We're they nails or screws and of what material? I'm building a much simpler version with t&g pine and need to decide what I want to use. I know galvanized anything is no good near food so I'm guessing stainless or something? Thanks!

Do you know how the finish/coating on the fasteners will react to the heat of the smoker?  From the reading I've done thus far, people are recommending stainless steel fasteners.

I had a half day yesterday with no kids, no wife and no work, so I got to working on the smokehouse again.   Managed to get a majority of the firebox complete.  Still have to do a little touch up work around the exit for the pipe.  Gotta seal up all the wholes around it.   Im no mason.  I have a new respect for those guys, its hard work and requires a real skill and finesse!

Any idea how long I should wait to fire it up?  Should I keep the fire small for a while and gradually go up?  Any suggestions on breaking it in are appreciated.

Nick, morning....  I would wait a week or two to let the mortar to cure.... then very small fires only....  bricks absorb water and heating too fast could cause a steam explosion breaking the bricks etc....    Start with a chimney of briquettes that is lit.... add more briquettes a little at a time and maybe a few small splits about 1" x 1" ...    The firebox is looking good....  Patience at this point will be rewarded.....    Dave
