A buddy of mine is determined to build a smoker out of two 55 gallon drums. His reasoning is that he wants the light weight .

Looking for some input from fellow builders on what would be the best design , taking in consideration the thin walls of the drums.

I was thinking getting the firebox under the cooking chamber would help,

Anyway, just starting to put a design together and would like everyones input. Im sure that there are plenty of smokers out there that dont have the resources to build pits like some of us have, but drums are easy to come by and maybe we could put together a great set of plans that the average guy can follow and build himself a great smoker.  Im not going to build this one for my friend, Im just loaning the tools and giving advise on it. I want him to be able to say he built it himself.

Here's a guy that kept it simple.

Hey Ribwizzard, I saw a set up for that somewhere and when I find it I will post it.  What they did was stack them on top of each other laying them on their sides.  They used 2 old wood burning stove legs. I believe, to add space between them.  And 2 small pipes going up to the CC.  The whole set up was sold as a kit.  I will find it again and post it for you.

Jabbo, If I were to build it for myself, I would build it just like that. I have never used a double barrel smoker but just by looking at it can tell that it would probably cook good.

I'll show it to him and see what he thinks.

We have a new member here from Mexico that has a double barrel smoker, his top chamber is insulated with mineral fiber.  He has pictures of it in the "Other Builds" section. User name is isosa and the thread is "Our smoker 'the pharaoh'". Here's the LINK

I have also seen them built in sort of a T shape with on laying on top of the other one that is standing up.  I imagine it works kind of like the center firebox idea on a RF.
