A friend at work got a vertical gas water smoker from Sears as a fathers day gift. He took it out for a trial run last weekend. Monday when he came in he seemed to be complaining "wow thats a lot of work " although his results sounded Ok. While out at a local bbq center he was looking at the BGE ant the Traeger Pellet Grills. The sales associate was pushing the BGE, which I am am explaining "thats more work" My thoughts are the BGE is overpriced and has a small grilling area and then he has to deal with Coal / wood chips as well as well as maintaining oven temps. If I had the $$$ Id go with the Traeger. Just my thoughts. Any opinions on this.

my 2 cents...yes the bge is overpriced for what it is....but it is damn nice.....but not gonna get my pennies...... as for the pellet muncher trager.....they also are damn nice, and better price per smoke wise then the bge, but still....as nice as they are not gonna get me stuck into buying pellets for life....... same issue as when I looked at the MES verses the bradley units.......I went MES....cheaper and didn't get stuck with buying the radically overpriced (can you say gas prices??????) "pucks"......been happy ever since....

Ceramics are pretty easy once you get the hang of it. They are expensive, and I never would have bought one if I didn't find it cheap used.

Compared to electric/gas, maybe slightly harder, but much easier than an offset. Biggest problem is size, they don't hold much meat.

Ceramics don't get cleaned out all that much, and they burn unattended for long periods of time at steady temps. All in all, I like mine, but if somebody offered to pay me enough for it I'd sell it in a minute. They are best at conserving charcoal, it doesn't take much to keep it burning.

More work??? A BGE is a set it and forget it cooker......12 hrs burn on 1 load of fuel!!
Ya theyre high dollar but you get what you pay for!

And dont forget, ya cant just throw it in the back of the truck and take it somewhere for an afternoon cook. You will need a forklift..........
