heading down to Ft. Benning, GA the first of July for my brothers graduation. I'm looking for some good places with great Q to stop on my way down and back up. Haven't decided on the route yet, but I'll either be taking 75 S to Atlanta or 65 S into Alabama, more likely 65. I figure theres beeter Q this way, but all ideas are welcome. Let me know where you like. Also, is there anything near Ft. Benning (I know its a huge place and I'm not sure where we're going).

Not sure of any places but if you keep your eyes peeled you'll more than likely see a few. Stay off the main routes and go through some small towns.

Oh, now ain't you in luck?!

The best barbecue joint in the world IMHO is Macon Road Barbecue in Columbus, maybe 6 or 7 miles from Ft. Benning, depending on where on the base you're starting from (it's a big place).

The same people run Brennan Road Barbecue, and there are some who think it is even better. I found it just about the same.

County's barbecue is very popular and they do decent ribs and some excellent sides but the butts are just a cut above Sonny's. (Country's has at least 3 locations in Columbus; the one in the old bus depot downtown is, by all accounts, the best.)

If you want to venture out a bit, Phil's in Eufaula,AL (35-45 minutes south of Fort Benning) is excellent.

My wife made me get off the computer before I could finish my previous note, so here I am again.

Can't help you much with I-65 places. Haven't traveled that road much.

But if you take I-75 here are a couple of suggestions:

Bradley's Barbecue, Sweetwater, TN. About halfway between Knoxville and Chattanooga, about a mile east of I-75 on the road into Sweetwater (you'll see it on one of those where-to-eat signs at the freeway exit). Best 'cue I've had in Tennessee, and, yes, that counts a bunch of places in Memphis. We never travel I-75 anywhere near meal time without stopping.

In Kennesaw, GA (an Atlanta suburb), there's Big Shanty Smokehouse. Everythings's good, but it's the ribs that draw raves. (Exit 273, Wade Green Road, then about a mile west to 3393 Cherokee St., which is the same as Wade Green; the name changes along the way.)

Between Atlanta and Columbus, just south of I-75 in Newnan (exit 47), there's Sprayberry's, which is a legendary spot. I ate my first 'cue at the original location (this one is relatively new) almost 70 years ago, and have had some fine meals there since. I fear success has gone to their their head, though. I don't think it is even in the top 50 percent of Georgia pits now. A lot of people love it, however, so you might take a chance if you're there at mealtime.

Being from Georgia, when I talk about "barbecue" I mean pork butt, and I don't think Rendezvous serves anything but ribs, do they?

You can have barbecued ribs, barbecued beef, barbecued chicken, etc., but "barbecue", noun, is pork butt in my mind.

Not trying to start an argument (although there are people in Memphis who might come to blows arguing the merits .of Rendezvous vs. some of the city's other rib joints); that's just the way my feeble mind works,

When I visit new joints I look for heavins trio. Ribs brisket and pulled pork.
