Finally decided to pull the trigger on a pellet pooper and was wondering what brand pellets are available in metro Detroit. Done some preliminary searching and at 5 places I went to, all there are is Traeger. Gotta be others available here? I am hoping to get in on a future group buy of LumberJack  as I see they have ?advertised? group buys in a county not far from me. Just wanted to get a few trial bags until that happens. I guess I can always do Amazon prime.

Friend of mine has a Traeger and his smoked meats are very good but with little to no smoked flavor. He Amazon primes his pellets so he's never looked locally for any.

I ordered a Camp Chef Woodwind and it comes with a bag of pellets so I'm not desperate but...

For those with pellet rigs, can I use my AMNPS in it? Or do I need to order a tube? And where would be the best place to set it? I like a smoky BBQ so I'll probably alway be a customer of Todds!

Thanks, Wimpy

There's a Menards just to the West in Livonia, they stock Pit Boss 40 pound bags at a great price ($19.76) per 40lb bag. They have the competition blend, apple and hickory available in stock.

I really like the Pit Boss Competition blend so I think you are in luck if your local Menards has them.  If not you should be able to get the  Pit Boss Competition Blend from amazon for close to the same price, I did about about 6 months ago :)

Also I'm not sure if you will be using the AMNPS or the Tube version but my guess is that you WILL want one of the two.  I feel like most of the pellet grill guys go with the tube but please do some searching to confirm what your best option would be from those who actually do it.

Best of luck!

If you want more smoke flavor start off using 100% hickory pellets like those from LumberJack and  Cookin Pellets.

Since you live in a large metro area you should have no problem getting a LJ group buy together in a few weeks, and shipping should be inexpensive from WI. BBQPelletsOnline will help you with the group buy by contacting others in your area that have previously purchased from them, and you can post here and at PelletHeads to get more folks on board.

Thanks guys for the responses, I'll try the pit boss for now and try to get a group buy going!

Hey! Found a local store who carries Lumberjack pellets! 40lb bag for only $49.86!!!! Whoo hoo! Yeah right, ain't gonna happen! That is definately a little too dear for me. Pit boss is what I'll be using for now.

I think the Pit Boss Competition Blend is the only Pit Boss I will buy.

The other flavors are a blend and not 100% of the pellet flavor listed.  One guy on these forums stated that the Pit Boss Apple was actually 40% apple and 60% Hickory... That's an odd combo to call "Apple" since the Hickory would very likely stand out much more than the apple lol.

I have a local LumberJack "dealer" I haven't used yet.  He is about 8-10 miles from me and he gets pallets at a time for him and his buddies but sells them on craigslist as well.  I will hit him up some day for some bags once I work through some of my generic blends and make room.

I could totally use a 40 pound bag of apple and maybe a 40 pounder of Pecan.

I would also like 20 pounders of Cherry and Maple.

I currently have a 20 pounder of Alder, a 20 pounder of Mesquite, and a 40 pounder of perfect pellet 100% Hickory.

Then I have 3 blends where I'm really trying to work through the one I like least where, I can live with the other, and the final one is the Pit Boss Competition Blend which I really like.  It's not as good as Lumberjacks Maple, Hickory, Cherry blend but it's not so far off either and the price point is right on.

Anyhow, enough of me rambling about my pellet collection.  If I were near you I would gladly split/trade some of what I have for what I want/need lol

I'm from around Lansing and travel to Clinton township to a guy that deals cookin pellets brand. I've been using them for 2 years no issues. If you buy 4 or more bags they are $25 for 40lbs it's about an 1.5hr drive for me so I pick up 6-8 bags at a time.

$9/bag isn't too bad, but if your willing to buy #500 or can split that with a friend, you should be able to get them for about $6/bag in MI.

Hi folks, I'm new here on this forum and new to pellet grills. I'm signed up for two group buys in Michigan, and each buy is looking for one more buyer who can go in for 500 lbs. Sounds like a lot but they don't go bad if you store them properly and the price is really good. Buyers get to choose a mixed variety of pellets.

Here's the quote I've had for the Detroit buy:
Quarter-ton Pricing for your Lumber Jack Pellets in a Full-ton order would be:
$128.70 Quarter-ton Pellets (13 40# bags, any standard variety)
$40 Picked Up at Detroit Terminal
$10 Group Buy Processing Fee
---------------------------------
$178.70 Total - $13.75/40# bag ($7.18/20# bag)
and this is for the Grand Rapids buy:
Quarter-ton Pricing for your Lumber Jack Pellets in a Full-ton order would be:
$128.70 Quarter-ton Pellets (13 40# bags, any standard variety)
$34 Picked Up at Grand Rapids Terminal
$10 Group Buy Processing Fee
---------------------------------
$172.70 Total Picked Up - $13.28/40# bag ($6.94/20# bag)
I could go either way, Detroit is a one hour drive but I don't enjoy the drive. Grand Rapids is two hours but much more pleasant. Let me know if you're interested!
