Served four years active duty in the Marine Corps....... started work this morning at 7am, worked like a rented mule most of the day. On the way home, I stopped to pay an insurance bill and guess what, they were closed for Veterans Day, along with the rest of 'em. I would imagine the majority of people who had today off are NOT veterans. Something wrong with that picture?
Anyhow, I come on here to post to a veterans day thread and there isn't one. Something wrong with that picture too!
I have WAY distant relatives from West Virginia who served on both sides in the Civil War, some still with the last name McCoy from the famous feud clan. My grandfather was a WWI Army doughboy serving in Europe. One uncle in the Army was in WWII in the Battle of the Bulge. My FIL was a Navy Torpedo bomber pilot in WWII. My dad served in a squadron on three Navy aircraft carriers during the Korean War. An uncle in the Air Force and a cousin in the Army served during Viet Nam. I flew Navy Attack during the relatively peaceful Cold War. My BIL flew Navy F-14s during Desert Shield. My father, BIL, and me are the only ones still alive celebrating Veteran's Day in the family.
Like I said, military runs in my family so today is a special day and I appreciate all who have served and are still serving.
Oh, and I worked half a day today because I just had too much to do and didn't want to leave the work for others.
I'm working my morning job and this old Japanese man walks in using a cane. He's also missing an arm and I notice his shirt says "go for broke!"
He was a member of the 100th infantry battalion!!! That's the most decorated unit in the history of the U.S. military (for length of service). It was also primarily made up of guys from Hawaii.
I thanked him for his service and gave him a little salute...
Veterans Day is always a big day in my family. From the Civil War to the current war in the middle East, members of my family have served and fought. As a proud Navy veteran (and before you jarheads start in on me, I was a Corpsman!) it makes me especially proud to have two sons currently serving in the Navy.
I would also like to give a special salute to all the spouses of veterans. They lived and died through every little piece of news they received from the war zone and theirs is also a special kind of courage.
