So I'm brand new to smoking with a firebox. I've noticed flying ash particles making their way to the cooking area. Is this normal? Will it hurt the meat? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What kind of cooker are you using? Unless you're reloading sticks or coals, there shouldn't be a bunch of ash flying around: may want to check your intake to make sure that you don't have too much airflow coming into the box. If it's because you're reloading, take something (a pie tin works well) and cover the connection between the FB & the CC while reloading to keep the ashes out until they settle again. Like Gator said, it's not a big deal if a little gets through.
