Hawaii
When I first met my wife 23 years ago in Hawaii it was a must we would visit her family on the East Coast regularly, Hahaha!! Her mom always rented a beach house in the Outer Banks for a week. This is the first time I saw a grill like this. I was put to task to cook our family meal every year and this type of grill is what I had to work with. Growing up camping and cooking over what ever was available here I took to this very well.

I’m sure many of you have seen this style grill and used them. After about the third year there I started hunting one down. I found one on line. It was a bit smaller than what I was used there but that was fine. I mounted it in a bucket in cement so it could be portable. Have used it many times on camping trips even though it is a bit heavy😂😂. Anyways it’s been a while since I have used it and thought I would clean it up and fire it up for a couple of Chuck Eye steaks. Sorry for the trip down memory lane but I have loved cooking on this type of grill for very important people in my life!!

I had to wire wheel the grates to get rid of some rust but all in all it’s still in great shape! I can’t remember the name of this and I hope someone here knows what is. Kind of like a poor man’s Santa Maria as I can raise and lower the grate a bit😂😂. Started with a chimney of lump and threw on some Kiawe splits!

Only one home tonight so it was a simple Steak dinner with a Bubbies fermented pickle😂😂. Happy I cleaned that grill up and used it. Very fun to cook on that!!

Looks pretty much like any grill you can find in a park - though that looks a bit nicer. Used them many times not sure if they have a proper name
Yeah WaterRat I have seen them all over the East coast over the years. I did actually find the maker and that's how I ordered it but I forget now and there is no name plate on mine. Never seen one here on the islands and that's why it was a so fun for me to use it when I first saw it on The Outer Banks! Very nice and fun grills to cook on for sure!

Here you go.

We have one of their 30" fire pit rings set in landscaping blocks in the yard. I ordered a slight variation of a standard pit custom built without the cooking grate and picked it up on a visit to family when in Upstate NY. It's 3/16" thick and will outlast me by a wide margin.

And if i had it to do over again, I'd get a 36" or larger ring. Not long after I installed it I started messing around with my camping Dutch ovens again and wish I had a bit more room in the fire pit.

Had then in parks in Wisconsin when I was young. Permanently in the ground though.
Picnic tables close by.

These are at city and state parks all over Texas. Camp sites have a variation where the box is on the ground and a large ring of steel comes out of the front to form a fire ring.

Anytime I've ever used one of those types of grills in a public park/campground, I've always wrapped the cook surface (just over the top and wrapped around the outside grate on each side) with aluminum foil while the coals are doing their thing getting ready and then remove the foil and scrape the surface with a wire brush to get the gunk from previous cooks off the grill. FWIW.

Thanks everyone! Yeah Pilot rock rings a bell. Pretty sure that's what I ordered. I have had it for years and it is still solid. Fun grills to cook on!

Most cabins we rent in East Tennessee have these type grills. We always stock up on steaks and wear em out while we are there!

I have never seen one on the West coast. Must be a regional thing. The steak looks yummy.
We have them in WA state, both national and state parks. They might pull them during fire season. Also in the city park 1/2 mile from me. I remember we burned some hot dogs in one of those when my son was playing Little League.

They are everywhere around here, guess i always thought they were one of those things in every park around the country.

Was at Wolfe's Neck State Park in Maine last week and there are tons of them in the park.
