Amnps question

new to the amnps ,.. i have a bag of wood chips (more like a shredded wood) that i am having a hard time getting to burn in my amnps

i know its able to burn dust  has any one had success burning the shredded stuff? mine burns out  before i even put it in the smoker

I think you're going to have a problem trying to burn shavings or chips in an AMNPS... it was designed to burn dust or pellets.... I'm sure Todd will be along in a bit to comment on this...I've had an AMNPS for a while and it burns pellets just fine...

i have no prob burning the pellets  works great just wanted to try the chips i had

You can certainly give it a try but everyone who has tried it in the past has had nothing but problems keeping it burning

The challenge with the shredded wood is probably packing the particles close enough to get one to light the next and get a continuous and consistent burn...JJ

Sorry if I came across short, lkrus, was not my intent.... I do remember having a conversation with Todd a while back about burning other types of wood products in the AMNPS and it just wasn''t designed to do so.  Since I'm a woodworker I also asked him about using hardwood sawdust as well as pellets in my AMNPS.  Since I get a ton of sawdust from the table saw, band saw, planner and other tools... he told me even the shape of the sawdust has an effect on the AMNPS.  Some sawdust from woodworking machines are totally acceptable in the AMNPS and other are not.  We also talked a bit about wood chips, shavings and the lot.  It has to do with the surface area and 'curl's of chips and shavings.  I'll definitely defer to Todd for more detail... but I don't think - IMVHO - you're going to have much success trying to burn chips in an AMNPS....

hey gray didn't take it that way at all  ... its all good and all a learning experience thanks for your info   ill try and get a pic  of the stuff i was trying to use  just for a visual

try microwaving them 1st,  I lay about 1cup  at a time on a paper plate and zap'em for a minute let them cool down and then put the in the AMZN and then I kind of firm them down a bit, not pack them but just firm them down, then I light the end with a torch and not just through the hole I light the entire end by holding the torch up to the bottom and lighting the sawdust through the little holes and I do that through the side too, until I have about the first inch or two burning then I let them burn out and if they wont I wait a while and blow them out, and then I blow on the end I had  burning  and hopefully it glows, like when you blow on the end of a cigar, then it usually burns the whole way till they are all gone.

but the dust I am using is not like what you have but it is not like the amazn dust either

The AMZN dust is pretty much trouble free tho

Ikrus, morning.... I'm a little late to this thread....  I burn those chips all the time.... They need to be really dry... I use an aluminum throw away pie tin and place it and the chips in the smoker during preheat.... generally at 220 and above for a few hours.... Then I store them in an airtight container with a lid... Usually metal with a plastic lid like a coffee can.... If they are really dry they burn great.... On the left is shredded chips... On the right is pellets.... I dry the pellets the same as the chips....   It is so much easier to keep them burning if they are dry.....   Dave
