As many of you know I burn a lot of pellet dust in my tubes and it's worked quite well for years for me.Yesterday I had not much to do and had a nice little pile of oak sawdust and packed a tube with it and it didn't work out so well.I'm kinda looking to see just how thin and barely perceptible smoke I can get and I remember mentions that true sawdust is good for that. Not that I don't get great smoke from pellet dust I'm just experimenting for own enjoyment.

I remember Amazen had a 6x6 tray that burns dust exclusively and I didn't see it on the Pit Boss site.I found a older reference to it here on SMF but nothing much in an internet search.I would imagine these are pretty hard to find these days, not even on Amazon or Ebay could I find one.

I think at some point they discontinued the 6X6 , and sold the 5X8 as burning sawdust or pellets .

This is a product description from TSM , but you can get that size cheaper at other places .

Right before John passed he sent me one of his trays . It's a 5X8 . The rest went to LJ .
I've had no luck getting it to burn . About time to revisit it .

I had a 5x8 tray but gave it to someone at the local bar years ago as I to had not much luck in getting any type of consistency with it but at the time I was using it inside the MES,that's kinda why I started doing the u-bolt tube setup.

If I come across another tray cheap I'll give it a go.

Hopefully this is helpful Rich… I had that same issue with the dust. I ended up having to line a cookie sheet with some foil and spread the dust out… put on low temp (170 is the lowest our oven goes) for about an hour or so and that seemed to work a lot better and stay lit.

I bought this years ago and I still use it on occasions. It came with a tea light candle to help get it started. The dimensions of the unit is 6x6 I just use my cigar torch to light it.

I had that same issue with the dust.
I know that's common to do . I can take the same pellets or dust out of the tray , load it up in the tube , and they burn fine .
I've used brand new Amazen pellets that were stored inside . In the tray no go . Tube they take right off .
I've tried it sitting on the grate of my kettle with the lid off and it goes out .
I'm stopping short of nuking or drying .
I'll revisit it here soon . I have 3 tubes I use without issue , but John offered the tray I wasn't gonna say no .

I have two 5 x 8s and two tube's.

They all work good.

So far I have only burned pellets, but will try some dust made from pellets for my next project.

I have a habit of microwaving pellets for a minute and a half.

Don't know if it is necessary, but I have tried once without, and the pellets went out.

Works very well in the tube even though they're advertised as not for burning dust.I have a thrift store blender I use,you can get any consistency you want from coarse to fine.

Understood. Just thought I’d drop a line if I could be of some help. I too have struggled a bit with the tray… tubes seem to work better. One of my issues maybe my elevation?! I am at just shy of 5,000 feet.

I let mine burn for a minimum of 10 minutes with flame then blow it out. Have you tried that?

I never had any issue with my tray using saw dust. I gave it away along with my mes to my brother a cpl years ago. Not sure if he uses it or not. Never tried pellets in it. It was the 5x8 version. Use a tube now with pellets. Wish i would have kept the mes since getting back into sausage and bacon again. Now I am going to have to build my own cold/warm smoker.

Never had a issue with either dust or pellets in the tray. Just let it burn for 10-15 minutes before blowing out.

I have one and use it for smoking cheese. I mix in pellets with the dust to help keep it burning. I have not had good luck keeping dust alone lit.

Always . I'm all ears .
I had a 4 lb. beef sirloin roast to do today . So decided I would use the MES and the tray . Lit and burned 10 minutes . Blew it out , and let it go another 10 on the table . Flared back up , so I blew it out and into the mailbox . Been about 15 minutes , and I think it's out .
This is after the second flare up .

normanaj normanaj I saw that Only fire has a version of the 8 x 5 tray . About 25 bucks .
Everything I've bought from them has been good quality . Just got a SS basket for my spinner last week .

I went through Amazon on the basket and they had a 20% off coupon .

I have a couple of the trays but after using pellet tubes I prefer those. Never had one go out like the trays do.

There's a brand on there right now with a 6% coupon and I have a free month of Prime but computer memory took priority. At this point the u-bolt modded tube burning dust has served me well...I'll find a way to make sawdust burn in them.
