So last week I did my first cook using a new Oklahoma Joe Bronco 2.0. Did Dino and short ribs flying blind with not a clue and trusting on board temp gauge. Just picked this TW “Smoke” any others have feedback or tips on this model? 1 air temp probe and 1 meat probe. Probably doing a brisket I have in freezer next. If my skills improve enough with this new gear I bought a whole small turkey for after brisket. Hopefully up the learning curve.

Couldn't have made a better choice... I have 2 of them plus 2 Thermapens ... Thermoworks is an awesome company ... GREAT customer service and also a sponser here at SMF ...

You don't really have to, but for sanity purposes... Calibrate both probes in both , an icebath and boiling water... They (Thermoworks) have an excellent calibration tutorial on their website...

Beat me to it on the calibration. Gives you good peace of mind!

I have the 4 channel model. It came with a NIST certificate of calibration so I'm not sure if it's necessary to go thru the process again, but it's not a bad thing to do it for your own reassurance.

I've had no issues at all with it. I even brought it up North for deer season. I was able to monitor brisket and smoker temps from the blind about 250 yrds away.

I've had 1 probe die in the 3-4 yrs I've owned it. It was 1 that I had packed away for the flight to deer camp, so the wire may have gotten tweaked in my luggage. When cleaning the probes try to keep water away from the area where the wire enters the probe. NEVER soak them. Carefully wipe clean with a sponge and then dry them. Other than that, try to keep the wires managed to reduce twisting and tight bends or kinks.

You should be happy with it and trouble free for a while!

Glad to hear. Thanks for sharing your tips

The Smoke is bulletproof. I bought one when they came out. It's a great unit. I've got other Thermoworks products even like the Signals, and the RFX, (Both are fantastic) but if I absolutely need the highest level of trust on a cook, I use the Smoke.
I'm trying to get feedback on the RFX since the release threads issues here on SMF and you prefer the tenured Smoke model vs the RFX, supposedly the Excalibur from Thermoworks. What are your thoughts on the RFX since the Smoke is your go to vs Signals and RFX? I'm not seeing the ads like after the release for the RFX. It kinda vaporized.

That's definitely a great unit but I'd recommend going with something like a chuck roast before I jumped on a brisket.
Giving more opportunities to learn your new Bronco will surely help in something like a long brisket cook.
But that's just my opinion and don't won't you be disappointed on your next big cook.

I do have about a 4# chuck roast in the freezer. I usually have great success with nice and tender in an instapot. Haven’t seen much info in smoker but I wan mentioning to my buddy is I should go for it. You may be right.

I started with a TW Signals. Absolutely love the unit.
Thought I left it behind when we migrated to Florida for the winter so I picked up a Smoke.
After comparing the 2 models, the Signals is better. Why? With the Smoke you have to purchase a Gateway to get Wi-Fi and use of the TW phone app. Wi-Fi is integrated in the Signals.
Easily updated by purchasing a gateway

Also I purchased a lot of the accessory probes. I use the short and regular straight probes more than the supplied 90° probe. I use the pin probe for sausage

I love the RFX as well. There's just things that can wrong with all that technology that might not even be the RFX's fault. I did an overnight cook on the WSM a while back and I know the Smoke is just going to work. I used the RFX for that cook, but threw an ambient probe from the Smoke in there as well, because I know I can absolutely trust it. With something connect to WIFI and my phone there just a myriad of things that can go wrong. My router could screw up, the power could go down, etc... How many posts do we see here from someone who's overnight cook went wrong due to a technology failure? I cooked some sausage with the RFX and I set an alarm for 151. My dumb ass turned the volume of my phone down and I didn't see the alert. I luckily caught it at around 158 which wasn't ideal for what I was doing but still ok.

I had a 6 probe BT for 8 years and the app crashes no matter which of 7 I tried since they can work for other makes with the same looking app. The BT transmitter no longer transmits but the probes and transmitter display for this Soraken are accurate so I use it during the day when I'm nearby. Morpilot, Tenergy, Synergy, Inkbird and others have the same 6 probe BT transmitter base look and all eventually crash. I went back to 100% RF transmitter and dedicated receiver no BT or WiFi. I have a back up Inkbird IRF-4S 4 probe for when the Soraken dies and I have 2 Identical RF ThermoPro TempSpike XR. One at my dad's house and one at my house. I'm close by but I'm here half the time helping him out him being 88. I used the TempSpikes yesterday in a meatloaf. I haven't needed to use the included 1,000' booster yet at either home. Nice to have for rotisserie smokes.
