Well I guess it's our turn.

There's a huge, out of control forest fire burning at Ft McMurray--THE center of our Oil Sands sector. A mandatory evacuation notice has been issued for the city of Ft Mac. 88,000 people are on the road trying to escape. They only have 2 choices--1 highway going south and 1 highway going north. Both highways are at a crawl.

Quite a large part of Ft Mac has already been destroyed by the fire. As of yesterday over 1600 homes and businesses are nothing but ash.

Hundreds of people are stranded out on the roads with no gas, food, water, or shelter.

There's no relief in sight from the fire in the near future. If it continues north, the mega Oil Sands plants will ignite and then the disaster will be incalculabley huge. If the fire spreads there, it will make the oil fires in Iraq seem pretty minor. I have no idea how these fires would be contained.

Been working at Syncrude the last 3 weeks and Shell Albian 3 weeks before that, which is why I haven't been active on here lately.

I'm currently stranded at camp near Fort MacKay, AB. SB hwy63 is closed and on fire; the only road out of town. Very smoky here and flames visible at night. Evacuees and their families rushed the camps on Tuesday night. Many of them living in their vehicles. No word on how or when we're getting out of here.

Will keep you guys updated!

Sorry to hear you're stranded, but at least you're in a camp.  Hope you get out soon.

Thanks everybody for the well wishes.  It's really rough on the families stranded, and even those who made it out.

It is really nice to see the whole country pulling together for a change.

We're in no danger whatsoever.  We're 200 odd miles south west of Ft. Mac.

I saw some of this on the news about an hour ago!!

Our Prayers are with all those anywhere in the area!!

Please Stay Safe!!!

Update:

Plans of fuel coming from the south to push through an RCMP escorted convoy through the fire zone in the morning.

This will get us workers who drove here home to open up camps for evacuees.

Hoping this is the truth, not just rumors!
