So I wanted to share my experience with the Silverton 620. I bought it at Costco a few years ago and it served me very well. It keeps precise temperature and overall, I was very satisfied with it. Recently, the hot rod went out and I said to myself "...how hard could it be? I'll just buy and replace it myself..." Boy, was I wrong.
The first surprise was when I went on Traeger's site and couldn't find the model. Apparently they've discontinued it. I was like "OK, that's fine," so I went on Amazon and bought a hot rod for my model. To my surprise, when I got the hot rod, its connectors did not match what I had on my Traeger, so I returned it. I double-checked the model number with the actual model number (with a bunch of letters and numbers in there) and bought another hot rod on Amazon. When I got it, again it was the wrong connector type.
So I went to one of those specialized sites - a Traeger grilling parts site - searched for my model name, bought it, and lo and behold, the connector was wrong again. At this point, I'm pulling my hair out trying to understand what the heck is going on. I ended up buying a connector on Amazon and cutting the wires, connecting them to the proper connector so it would work with my grill. It would still throw an error saying that the igniter was disconnected. At this point I'm like, "Did I just lose $700?"
So I decided, "OK, I'm gonna give it one last try." I went to Traeger's site again to search for my model, but this time I decided to search for a manual. I looked for manuals, found a Silverton 620 manual, and started going through it. I somehow accidentally found the suggested part number and searched for it. The part number came up and I'm like, "OK, well I don't know if it's working or if it's the proper one," so I started looking at the feedback and comments from customers. I found that they had to cut the wires and were going through the same problem, to which there was a response from Traeger customer service saying that you shouldn't be cutting wires. Rather, there are many different variations of the model and you have to really pick the right hot rod.
At this point I was like, "OK, well let me try to talk to a representative." There was an instant chat window that I used. I sent a message explaining my model and what I'd done before that didn't work. Finally, the person said, "OK, here's the link to the right hot rod for your model." The nice thing is that they at least offered to give me a 20% discount on the hot rod. I didn't end up needing to replace a fuse or anything like that since my screen is still working, but that's the experience I had with the Traeger Silverton 620. I am waiting now for the new rod to come and will give this a try again.
In my mind, for a $700 grill, I don't think I should be going through such a complicated process for what seems to be a simple replacement procedure. I think Traeger really needs to fix their parts discovery system because I imagine - and I know for a fact - that I'm not the only one who came across this issue. So that's my airing of grievances for today. Just wanted to let everyone know, and if you do run into issues, really go to Traeger's website and chat with a representative directly instead of trying to figure this out on your own like I did.
