1st time smoker

I am a first timer.  Do I need to soak chips before putting in smoker

What kind of smoker do you have?

In most cases you don't need to soak the chips.

If you are having a problem with the chips catching fire & burning up, 

then you may want to soak them or switch to wood chunks.

Thank you for your reply SmokinAl.   I bought a Masterbuilt electric smoker.  All I have done to this point is season it, but I did some more reading, and it looks like there are differing opinions.  Unless you feel strongly otherwise, I believe I am not going to bother with the soaking step.
