...one huge industrial propane tank he mounted on a pull behind trailer and modded into a smoker. That was it for me, I was hooked. I have a beater ECB I was given, that I modded with a vent, an air intake shutoff and rope gasket around the lid. I have a REAL hard time bringing the heat above...
...probably missed me too much with all of the great members and discussion. I've not smoked anything in a couple years since my old, modified ECB was in such rough shape that I always had to debate myself over using it again. Well, now I can finally retire it for good, since I picked up an nice...
...wrapped no smoke can get to the food. even so since i have the offset fired up i just complete the cook there instead of carrying inside to the oven. only exception are hams or on occasion butts. sometimes on these i will throw into the ecb (el cheapo brinkman ) to hold or finish while i sleep.
...Well with the forced vacation due to the pandemic I started cleaning the garage and found the cooker and thought how could I use it with my ECB. Here are the pics of my FrankenBrinkmann! I am going to give a it a go tonight and see how it goes. I did a test heat with a pan of water in it and...
Sorry, did not intend to treat you like a newbie! I I strongly recommend the B&B. Some of the guys over at the weber virtual site who are located in the midwest got a completely different version of the Blue Hog Briquettes than I did on the east coast. I love the 4 bags I have used, but the...
That's what is referred to as an ECB (El Cheapo Brinkman). Lots of good food has been cooked on them, despite the nick name, and many a cook cut their teeth on them. (self included)
We have an ECB section here with lots of info and mods to make it a better smoker.
Unfortunately Brinkman closed...
...lurking here for about 2 years, and finally joined yesterday.
I live in the Chicago area and have been smoking for about a year.
I was gifted an ECB and shortly afterwards, purchased a Dyna-Glo cabinet smoker which I use most of the time now.
I look forward to the continued guidance I have...
UPDATE...
I finally got around to trying the hotplate in the ECB...it worked flawlessly (well, all things considered), so it "will" work.
As I sat there contemplating what was the best way to insert/mount the hotplate and be able to get to the control without having to lift the body off the...
...the weber hype until recently, always figuring somethign else is almost the same and should be almost as good and I've been wrong every time. The best thing to happen to me was sucking up and buying a WSM and ditching my ECB. I also restored an old 96 Master Touch and that thing has been a tank.
...pinkie dry for a year you won't wind up with much flavor. Fruit wood pieces this sized are best used asap.
I used to go out in the woods next to the house and collect green, fresh off the sapling, hickory limbs and use them in my old ECB. Fresh off a green tree worked fine with small pieces.
...I do normally run the minion method, however, I have to admit, I am still learning this smoker a bit, since this is my first upright since an ecb in like 2000. I cut my teeth with fire management on an offset, the Brinkman smoke n pit. Decent offset, once you get it dialed in with a few...
Welcome back. Chicken looks great! An ECB was my first smoker over 20 years ago. I remember getting up at 2AM to put the turkey on for Thanksgiving and the inordinate amount of attention that it required. I still maintain though, that some of my best results came out of that ECB!
Second on a Weber Smokey mountain. I use one after learning on an ECB and they’re very easy to use. I’ve since added a party q and with a temperature controller like that, they literally run like an oven. With my partyq I have to start the coals and get it up to temp, then start shutting down...
...also want to look into a temp controller. While my WSM would always be pretty steady, itd tend to hit 1 or 2 times per smoke where either the temp would shoot way up or start dropping. Compared to my ECB this wasn't a lot of work, but now that i have a party q, it really has become set and...
What a way to maiden a refurbished ECB, I'm flattered. My first smoker was an ECB. It's still in the family, my daughter "borrowed" it about 8 years ago and hasn't returned it! Oh well, at least it has a good home and is getting used.
Glad to have you join :-)
Do yourself a service and get an independent Thermo for your ECB. The little guy in the lid is just awful at monitoring temps.
Learning to master that smoker will really make you appreciate your next one, should you choose to continue down the rabbit hole of smoking...
