Xmas gift - Gas grill smoke 'attachment'

I am looking for a gift for my other half. He is an avid (gas) griller, and I think a full smoker might be a bit much for him, however I did see that you can get attachments/inserts for gas grills to put wood in, heat it up with the gas and then cook it that way. Is this corrrect? Any information you pros could provide would be amazing!
