So after reading this thread, I'm inspired to do some worm composting of my own. I'm fascinated with the flow through design, so I wont have to constantly be changing the bedding. When you designed your boxes, is there some sort of plans you followed or a website that would offer suggestions/tips?

That is some NICE looking soil...(and great looking fish too, Bearcarver!). I am going to have to try raising some worms; we just bought a bag of miracle grow to start tomatoes, peppers etc and what we paid for doesn't look near as nice as what you and your worms created. Thanks for the "qview"!

I've been raising worms for years, best fertilizer money can buy. If you take about 2 pounds of the casting,putem in a bag made of cheese cloth, so what you have is large tea bag for worm tea. Get a 5 gal. bucket filled with rain water, drop the tea bag in,add a cup of unsulfered molasses and an air supply like the air pump in a fish tank.Leter go for 24hours and it'll start to look like root beer with the foam on the top.Strain and put into spray bottles, now you have the best liquid fertilizer that money can buy. Spray it on the foliage, it wont burn the plants, stand back and watchem go. Use it up fast as it will only keep a couple of days. And that worm tea is worth about 25 bucks a gallon.

OK, now I have some questions.....
It appears that you live in Tennessee, right? What do you do with your set-up during the winter?
I've always understood that the worms dug in below the frost-line, which here (Il.) I think is around 4 feet deep.
I used to raise worms for fishing, years ago. I had 2 bins in our basement (unfinished basement - that is). They were about 4 ft. sq. and about 10in. deep. They did great until some kind of fly snuck in and then I ended up with zero worms and a bunch of stinkin' maggots. How do you prevent that from happening to your set-up?
I guess that's enough ???? for now.

Alot of people around got ripped off by that worm scam. I know one guy that lost 25K. I am suprised that I did not get into it. Just got back from a Rainbow Trout fishing trip in Arkansas myself. Caught lots of trout.

Sorry Brother..been really busy..Not even in the country right now. Too bad you dont live closer, im selling the house and would let you have the whole thing...If anyone wants them let me know!!!!!!!!

Answers:
1) I do not do anything duringthe winer, feed them very very little as they dont eat much. Box has 12 inches of soil in it and is plenty. They will all ball up together in teh center One morning it was 5 degress and I went out to see if it was froze and there wa steam coming out...
2) The maggot you get because of two things a) too much moisture b) Too much food. If you over feed them it will turn rancid and thats when you get the maggots.

I also completey change the soil once a year and use the castings as fertilizer for the plants on our porch.

That is very nice looking castings.  I am going to start a worm bin myself.  I don't want to sell the castings or worms, but i do want to use them for my garden.  Thanks for all the tips everyone.

How do you separate the worms from the castings so you can get the good dirt out to use? Screening or some such?
