Hi guys love the forum new to smoking and learning a lot was just curious why I've seen a number of YouTube videos with people putting whole logs on the cooking grate I think I know why or at least a few reasons why but was just curious

I’ve never seen that personally but it would be for smoke I am assuming.

On the cooking grate??? I could see that in the firebox....I assumed it was to preheat the logs ot protect the meat closest to the fire

Ahh ok I see it was for a wood smoker. Yeah probably to preheat. I’d just preheat on top of the firebox personally.

Yea sprry I did not put that...I usually do to in my firebox or if there is room in my cooker

Ok wood chunks on a gas grill or charcoal grill grate is a good way to get some smoke flavor on something your grilling.
But putting it on the grate in a smoker is going to do nothing. It will never get hot enough to give off any smoke.
