I live in ND and travel very rural roads in -30. If I had soup,water, or stew in my pickup, it would be hard as a rock in October and not thaw until May. I can see tow rope, booster cables, a blanket,cell phone charger and keep your gas tank over half full as being useful. Water, lighter, candle, granola bars, whistle, and anything else pretty much useless. Not sure about the batteries on an electric car in -30.. id probably be pulling a gas generator on a trailer. Lol

Same here in Vt.. Even getting cell service is a hit-or-miss in a lot of areas in our state. We have a couple of roads that the state closes down during the winter. They just can't plow them because of the twists and turns.

Same here in Vt.. Even getting cell service is a hit-or-miss in a lot of areas in our state. We have a couple of roads that the state closes down during the winter. They just can't plow them because of the twists and turns.

I have used a shovel on more than one occasion during the winter. Most of the time on a minimum maintenance road out hunting that I probably shouldn’t have drove down in the first place. Also if you do any ice fishing, a shovel and a tow rope are a must in the pickup.

Good reminder! It's still nice out but it's coming.I have been guilty of not packing much more then the basics but I know I should. It's not uncommon to hit minus 40 or more especially with the wind around here. A funny thing is my wife complains when I take the dogs out to the park for hour or two when the temp drops below 30 lol. The dogs don't mind at all and I prefer winter to summer heat anyway.

OK I should readjust my first post. I do not have to do anything to winterize but I always keep a lithium jump pack in a cubby. I had it there for 7 years and never touched it. Then I ended up with a dead battery. It started up my 4Runner right away. I made sure to recharge it after that.

Whenever I go off-roading it is a completely different story. I carry two tool bags and two 20 gallon totes. One with camping/toiletries and another with tow straps, hammers, pry bars a cordless impact and any other tools I might need or need to help others. They are strapped down when driving. I do take them out and store them when I get home.

I’m guessing you carry drinking water as well?

I carry it about 95% of the time in normal weather. Keep a gallon jug in the trunk. if it freezes, i can always thaw it. And it does freeze!

Yup. Same here. Many limited use, seasonal roads.

Have been trout fishing in April and caught in nasty snow storms!

HATE WINTER

Yes I always have lots of things just in case in the work truck and Monas SUV ( car really )
But for winter add snow shovel, always have lots of warm cloths and to change into from wet ones while working outside. Did I say I HATE WINTER

I bring water with me daily in a cooler, if not in a cooler or leave in the truck , it will just be a block of ice

Sounds like we're all getting ready for some winter camping. That's what my VW camper is for. Always loaded with a fridge, stove, sleeping bags, etc. Oh and a couple solar chargers....

A bag of kitty liter is also good to have for throwing under wheels if you get stuck.

My father had a 71 Chevy Impala with a 400 small block. The car didn't have positrack and one winter he put a bag of sand in the trunk. Well long story short. While driving down the interstate one day the bag of sand managed to slide over to one side of the trunk. It happened to be the side where the power was. With no place to pull over my father was fighting to keep the car on the road. It kept wanting to fishtail on him. Scary time at the moment, but made for good laughs for years after.

Boy was that car great for power-braking.

Now if you forget your phone the trip is ruined .

Most of the cars back then also weighed twice as much as most cars today, that always helped with traction
