Mini splits have gone into every single house I've worked on in the past decade if not longer.

Either way I was carrying a unit and got what anyone who's ever worked in a trade calls a "knuckle buster" except in my case I can actually see the top of my knuckle. I'm done with window units.

We’ve got 2 of them in our current house. Great for zonal
… Mini splits are going in next year, new deck will wait another year.
Consider getting a heat pump unit combo. Not much more money
I was planning to replace one of splits (a/c only) with a combo but we’re probably selling and moving next year

They are a solution for single room A/C and heating. A small unit sits generally high on a wall, with an outside unit, connected by plumbing and wiring. They do not replace whole house air conditioning, and several mini-split units would be less efficient in trying to perform that function. If you have a bedroom or say, kitchen that needs cooling so you can sleep or cook, they are ideal. I considered putting one in my garage, but I won't be hanging on to this house long enough for it to make sense. They are basically ac/heat for one room.

Very good points for Arizona

normanaj normanaj is Rhode Island. I have no idea on his heating and cooling requirements.

My summer house is in Minnesota. It is an 80's ideology that is all electric (heat) so no whole house ducting. Whole house A/C wasn't a thought in many all electric houses.
The living room, dining room, and kitchen are all a single zone or what the Realtors list as a "great room" to make a small house sound bigger and 1 split mostly handles the A/C with help from 2nd unit. Second unit is in MBR so my wife can close the door and chill it to 70° at night while the rest of the house stays at 78°. Perfect zonal usage of 2 mini split units.
My plan was to to replace the great room unit with a larger heat pump unit to better cool and to supplement the baseboard electric in the winter. May still do it for resale factor. Electric Utility offers a pretty generous rebate to update.

Single level ranch. Adjoined LV room/kitchen so one unit covers that. 3 beds/one bath, one unit for the master and one for the wife's office. The units I can get at cost plus labor and with the tax incentives it's doable.

RI weather in the Summer is typical with lots of humidity. One year Winter can be mild and the next frigid so having heat pumps to supplement our oil furnace is something we would do though unfortunately RI has the highest electricity rates in the country so they would be used sparingly.

Up to 8 evap off of 1 condenser, also they are very high efficiencies up to 28.5 seer for ac and 18 for heat depending on manufacture.
