Hello all,

I've been reading and researching for a little while, but this is my first post. This fridge has become available to me. Can anyone tell me if it'll work for a conversion? It's a Hotpoint. The seller says it's a 1950s model. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide!

Looks just fine. As long as the insides are metal and not plastic, you're good to go. You will still need to replace what few plastic or rubber parts may come into contact with heat, like shelf posts and the door gasket for instance. And you may want to check on the insulation when you are gutting it. Many of those older fridges used cardboard, which may be okay, but I wouldn't trust it. Fiberglass or Roxul is what most people here use.

What these guys said ^^^^^. Also check the interior of the door. Most of the fridges used some type of early plastic or something. You'll need to replace it if that is the case. Also, don't use the shelves currently in the fridge!

Get to it and post the progress along with any issue, we'll all be glad to give our input whether you like it or not!

Happy Smoking!

Does $60 seem reasonable?
An outrage!  Why they ought to be paying you to haul it off.

While that may have been true 20 years ago, now the price of materials to build one from scratch would be a lot more.   It kind of depends on the buyers mind.  I have no problem with the price.

Also you might think about how you are going to deal with the Freon.  While cutting the line and letting it vent won't hurt you, the gas can be recovered and used to recharge and older cars AC.

Also it is about a zillion dollar fine for the EPA violation to willfully vent the gas.

Sixty bucks sounds like a good price to me. Around here, sellers often put them on craigslist for $100-$250, even if they aren't working!  They must think they are selling gold...

Well, I bought it. Will bring it home Wednesday.

I sort of have a clue what to do, but I'll definitely have some questions, so I appreciate anyone willing to share their wisdom and experience.

My first question is, what do you do about the several small holes in the inner cabinet? Just forget about them? Or try to cover them up or plug them?

Thanks again. Can't wait to get started!

You can spend as much as you want to on a smoker build. Its all in how much you can afford and how fancy you want it..

I used a food-grade silicone to plug unwanted holes in mine. It was even silver-colored, so it didn't stand out too much.

Check out the many similar threads here for good ideas.

I used bunch of screws/bolts with washers to cover the holes.
