I too eschewed the newer MES for a
Smokin-IT (#2). Bought my first smoker last year - an inexpensive model from Lowe's that was great until the winds picked up and it started getting cooler at night. Decided on the
Smokin-it after hearing about the first round of problems with the newer MES's, and didn't want to have to (or feel like I had to) mod the smoker like the MES folks. Finally decided that the batten-down-the-hatches design was the way to go.
I haven't been let down since. Unpacked it, seasoned it and cooked in it the same day. Since fall, it's been used about twice a week to do briskets, butts, ribs and ABTs. I've also been luck that the
Amazen Tube has worked perfectly with the
Smokin-IT. I love that I can turn it on, let it run for 24 plus hours (when necessary) and not have to fiddle with it - no foiling, no reopening for more chips/wood, no basting/spraying, no heat adjustments. I currently have all four grills and the both grill holders in the dishwasher.
I will grab a PID for it someday (or for the eventual #3 replacement) to soothe my engineer's desire for as an exact temperature as possible, but out of the box it's been more than I could have hoped for.
