Gotta admit to doing that more than once. Some of us never learn, but here's a tip. Next time you toast you fingertip like that quickly grab your earlobe! No kidding, it sucks the heat right out of your finger! I've been doing it so long its a reflex reaction for me now. Try it you'll see what I mean.

Careful with grabbing anything else in order to stop the heat. It can make it worse. Take for instance my co-worker was melting sugar in order to make a sugar sculpture. The melted sugar was boiling and a bubble popped and sent a nice glob of melted boiling sugar onto his finger. He felt the heat and what does everyone do when they burn a finger. They stick the finger in their mouth to cool it. Well his finger went into his mouth covered with that hot sugar. Needless to say this only resulted in burning his tounge as well as his finger.
It was painful for him but for someone to the side watching it was quite comical ;)
Man I hate these admit your stupidity threads. Seems that I not only have plenty of fodder, I just can't resist sharing it..... Took the chip box out of my gasser, had on welding gauntlets but you know what? Just because the smoker is only 225 that chip box is somewhat hotter!! Deep blister left index finger. I had to complete the move I just couldn't make myself drop the offending object!!!

My worst wasn't the smoker. Anyone remember Visions cookware (many years ago)? All glass. If you used it on the cooktop the handles stayed cool. But you could also use it in the oven. Made some rice pilaf in the oven, took it out with mitts and set it on top of the stove. Grabbed both the pot handle and lids with no mitts. Couldn't drop that food!! So, I took the time to set it back down. Got the fingers and palm on the right hand and fingertips on the left. OUCH!!!!
Emptying hot coals on Saturday........thought it would be a good idea to put the metal box up against my forearm...........got a nice 2 inch square burn. All part of the process.
