which gasket should i use to seal my smoker doors

so I've tried one from Lowe's. after 2 uses it lifted and fell off.. So what have you had luck with? just a thought I've been tossing this in my head. has anyone used like a rubber seal. like what you would use on your refrigerator? that seems like it would be the best possible seal and keep the most heat and smoke in? No?

What kind of smoker is it?

sorry. its a master forge vertical smoker

I think the easiest way is to just get some high temp RTV silicone, clean the door surface real good then run a thin bead of RTV along the edge of the door where it mates with the smoker body. Lay some plastic wrap on the RTV and close the door. Once the RTV sets up open the door and remove the plastic. You now have a custom form fitted gasket!

good idea! but is that going to be a good seal? what about a good quality rope?

You can use rope but it's a PITA to get it to stick.
The RTV will be form fitted which means no gaps!

very true. will any high temp sealant work?

Yep! Permatex makes an Ultra Black, it looks a lot better than the red!
