WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK

My observation is ---- Bearcarver has done and still does a great job of helping and educating new and old members.
I've been smoking for over 50 years and Bear has helped me lots of time on various things. The way he responds seemes to work. He spends a great deal of time on his Step by Steps and answering people.

It does suck to lose all that info. I think the issue was with the photo hosting site (like Photobucket, read here: https://www.dpreview.com/news/68757...ons-of-photos-online-upsets-millions-of-users) where the images actually live. If I remember correctly one or two of the fairly big ones changed the way to do things and ended up screwing people on a ton of posted and linked to pics.
I don't use those services so someone who did/does can confirm whether this is the case or not.

The salmon lox thread I reference was a victim of this and it is a shame because the pics were very helpful :)

I'm not sure what lox recipe you were looking at, but mine is still in place with all the photo's & instructions.
I have made this recipe 15-20 times & it always comes out good. It's a little more involved than some of the other ones, but the time & wait is really worth it.

Thanks for the link Al!
Here is the one I've been using with the busted pictures, it is a dry cure: https://www.smokingmeatforums.com/threads/making-lox-a-picture-guide.87043/

It's funny how similar your recipe and the one in the post is. It is unfortunate that the "picture guide" post no longer has pictures hahaha :)

Well said .

Photobucket definitely cut off a lot of user's photos from displaying in forums, although for some reason mine are still working.

The problems I am seeing with photos on this site are not problems with an external hosting service (like Photobucket) but problems with the site itself. And the problems that have made this forum less easy to navigate are most definitely the result of the new forum software: this forum did not get any huge increase in the numbers of users in just the last two months.

Like Tall said, that picture problem isn't the fault of this forum.
The pictures that were inserted through the forum's software are still fine, including the ones I posted that way.
It was the ones that I ran through Photobucket that had to be replaced since the platform change.
Photobucket screwed everybody that was using it, and now wants $400 per year for their service.

Bear

Yep, Photobucket became a chamber pot.

I have nothing to compare to. The way it is, is the way it's been, because I'm to new here.
But, I also know most folks don't like change.

I'm not familiar with the software used to host SMF, but I'm willing to bet an adjustment could be made to lengthen the number of pages shown on the recent posts page. 10 is probably the default setting. An Admin could adjust the parameters for more pages...

I don't have a problem with change as long as I can see a good reason for it.
That being said, I don't know diddly about what is involved in operating a website, so I have to assume there is a good reason to change that I wouldn't understand. I'll survive, but I'm also old enough to be cranky and complain about it :D

I don't like change because it makes my pants fall down...

Welcome to the old enough to be cranky and complain about it club. There are a lot of us on this forum. :D

With the new format I seem to miss a lot of threads, I think a lot of you guys are missing them too. I usually go to the "recents" to see what is going on, and sometimes I can go back 6 or 7 pages & there are threads with just 1 or 2 comments on them. Gosh on the old format you would see threads with 40-50 replies, now if you get 10, it's a miracle. Maybe it's just the weather & nobody is thinking about smoking food or there are a lot of new members on here & the threads disappear much faster. I don't know, but if I miss one of your threads, it's not because I'm not looking for them or I'm not interested in replying to them. I just never found them. So I'm kinda apologizing in advance if I don't see your finest work!! :)
Are any of you having the same problem?
Al
I thought it was just me.
