When I turned 16, it was a big thing in my town for all the kids to go cruise our main street through town ( F street). I think gas was around $1.70 give or take. Now days, it's not even a thought to these kids. Alot because they can't afford it. Kinda sad to see traditions like that end over stuff like that.

I remember in the late 70s the gas lines were extremely long due to OPEC shutting down exports to countries that supported Israel. Some states even went to an odd/even license plate days for gas purchases. Hoping to alleviate long lines and reduce consumption.

We did not have gas lines in Oklahoma. That was a regional thing produced by oil price regulation that distorted the market.

The OPEC boycott was initially a problem. But it did not take long for refiners to work around it and buy OPEC oil from countries not being boycotted.

Texas was a major producer in the 70's . We weren't importing a large amount of oil, not like what occurred in the 90's when OPEC completely took over the oil market and in the process destroyed our domestic industry.

Our imports actually rose greatly in the 70's, while our domestic production fell slightly.

Ah, yes. The 70's gas crisis where gas was rationed and (though I forget the particulars), you could only get gas on certain days, depending on something or other.

Yeah, I was old enough to remember dad having to go out and sit in a gas line just so he could get to work.

It did put a slight damper on our road trips and late night cruising.

I never think to look when I stop to get fuel... all I know is E doesn't stand for enough lol! But use a credit card so get a little bit of cash back. Also if we get groceries at HyVee we get savings towards gas... some specials are like 25 to 50 cents off per gallon.

To be fair, wouldn't anything outside of California's borders be considered a third-wold country to Gruesome Newsom and his band of cronies.

Chris
That's for sure, Chris.

I don't think I've ever mentioned this here on the forum.
One of my last apprentices and hunting partner was David Newsom, Gavin's cousin. I met Gavin once when he was in his early 30s, I am good at reading people, and I didn't trust that slimeball from the moment I met him.
And this was before his political career. Now, I wouldn't pizz on him to put him out if he was on fire.

David, passed away yrs ago, due to a blood infection he got after breaking his leg in 11 places falling off a 15' ladder at work. Before he passed, he told me Gavin "WOULD" be Mayor of SF, then Governor of CA. I told him he was crazy.

Dave knew the Getty family would insert him into those positions, so Gavin could "pay them back". I sure wish Dave was still around, he was one of my best friends ever. Furthermore, I would apologize to him for not believing him about his slimeball cousin.

I could go on and on about Gavin, but I'd get banned for sure.

Dan.

I'm very familiar with the oil and gasoline markets.

I don't know your source for the importing of gasoline, but I doubt it , greatly.

The problem you have in California, is your State govt puts environmental demands upon refining gasoline. The gasoline you get from your refineries, is not the same as the rest of the country or the rest of the world.

And some foriegn country is not gonna refine gasoline just for California. They can't flip a switch.

Say, when a California refinery goes down for some reason, like most usually a fire. That takes gasoline off the market. And it can't be replaced from refineries outside the state, as would happen nation wide. The California gasoline market is entirely self contained within the state due to your environmental laws.

The demands on California refineries from your state govt is the primary and maybe only reason you pay a higher price. And the regulation is not decreasing, its increasing due to your politicians are on board the climate change train. Your situation is not gonna get better, its gonna get worse for consumers. My guess as to how your politicians continue to get re-elected, is the majority of voters in California are also on board that train.

I've not paid a lot of attention lately, but no one wants to own a refinery in California. I think Exxon is completely out of the state now. I haven't heard much about Chevron. But the refineries have been up for sale and have been purchased by smaller operators.
There are 14 refineries in California. Every gas station in the state gets their gas from them.

It does not matter what company owns or has their name on them, it is all the same.

That is where I laugh at brand loyalty. It is all the same. If you go near a refinery you will see every brand lining up to fill their tankers up to deliver it to the stations.

The commercials say they have their own blend but it is just a 5 gallon can in a 10000 gallon tanker.

Just get the cheapest gas and you will be fine. If there was a problem it would be major news.

Yes, its like that everywhere.

But California as a state, has their own unique blend. Its been a while since I dove deep into the weeds on this, but when it comes to gasoline, you are in your own world. You're entirely dependent on those 14 refineries.

Chris, there are 5 refineries within anywhere from 10-30 minutes away from my house. I still have friends working 4 of the 5. Not one of the refineries have produced a single drop of gasoline in over 3 yrs.
They have all converted over to bio diesel, and now import gasoline from 3rd world countries. they are using their storage tanks so store foreign gasoline companies to resell at a high markup . So basically we don't produce gasoline anymore.
This country is doomed!!!!

It's all shipped in, as far as making gas for CA, they don't have to make a special blend for CA it's all oxygenized additives added in the refineries here. Our politicians are inserted much like the winner running/ruining our country.
The same way they are going to try to insert Newsom into the big white house on Pennsylvania Ave in DC

I stand corrected. Its been a few years since I dug deep into the reasons other US domestic refiners can't send gasoline to California.

I still can't see importing gasoline, but nothing stays the same for long.

But the reason your refineries are making biofuel, is due to your state govt placing regs on carbon.
