weird smell

Hey,
Im in middle of cook on my offset and the fire has weird smell.
Im using mostly oak and little ash and maple.
It has like a asphalt smell. What it is? is from wood or cresote build up?
Also is it safe to eat?

I've never had an asphalt smell. I did get some acrid smoke now and then but it cleared up after burning some more and the temps climbed.
Green wood just tastes ... damp ... to me.

Might be burning some creosote that had built up in your smoker.
