I got this old Weber kettle as a hand me down. It is like 30 years old.

A little refurb action and I think I am in business.

Can't wait to do some smoked chicken on this rig.

Some steel wool and some grill paint are in the future. Hope it is worth the effort.
 
Not so sure the grill paint will stick on a ceramic surface... but then again, I've been known to be wrong before. Spray it with Simple Green, scrub a little with a brush, hose it down and run it. What's the inside look like?

@JC in GB . Don't be in a hurry to paint ( I would not paint it myself ) Just take your time and clean it up . That kettle is older than 30 years . Look thru this link for some tips on cleaning , but there is a age link in there too . Get the letter code off the lid vent and match it up . Depends on the age , it may not have a letter code . In that case I think you need a serial number .

My biggest concern is the lack of bottom control vents.

I hope the link you provided can help with that.

Then it's older than 1979 . If you scroll down that page it shows pictures . Look for when they started putting wood handles on the lid . Then if yours is one or 2 fasteners to hold the lid on . That will give you an idea .

My biggest concern is the lack of bottom control vents.
You can buy whatever you need for that . Replacements are about $20 for the set . I think they're are 4 1/4 " with 4 holes . Just not sure about older kettles .
 
I saved a 96. My advice is to get Ajax or dawn dish soap, some sponges, a good hose nozzle and a razor scraper. Give it a good spray down and then scrub with soap then spray again and let dry and then scrape off the grease inside the lid with the razor scraper. I used half a bottle of degreaser and it did diddly. A good grease cutting soap with a sponge does way better and cleaned up a lot of the surface rust
 
Mine today, cooking some pork chunks, just getting started.

I cut the grate in half so I could tend the fire. Three easy snips with bolt cutters. I still have the other half and I can put it back like Nothing Ever Happened.
