Weber Kettle and Maverick therm

Hello.  I just bought a new Weber 22 1/2 " Kettle.  So I need suggestions as to how you deal with the Maverick therm and the Weber lid.  Surely you don't drill a hole through the Weber?  Doesn't the heavy Weber lid damage the Mav probe leads?  Any suggestions are welcome.  I have just stepped into the world of a Weber kettle.  I have used offsets and other things for years but I figure if I can pick your brains I will save a WHOLE lot of trial and error.  Thanks for the help.  Keep Smokin!

I always just set the lid down lightly. Hasn't damaged the wires so far.

I guess you could string it through the top or bottom vent if you wanted to.

I feed them thru the top vent, which works with the longer 6 foot Mav leads but not so good with the little 3 footers.

I set the lid on mine gently. I guess I could run them thru the top vents since 90% of the time I leave them open. Use care when allowing the plug end to dangle, if it is right in front of the lower vent hole they melt. Don't ask how I know!!!!!!!

I'm at work but there is a good video by an SMF member on how to use an angle grinder to make a cut in the rim on the WSM. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work on a kettle too. Use the search feature to find it.

I too gently put the wire under the lid...haven't hard any problems thus far

I cut a little notch in the lid... or you could put the notch in the bottom half as Noboundaries said...

Hello.  Thanks for the tips.  The top vent was my first thought.  Longer leads if I chose that method, check.  Top tip there DOCDOG nothing teaches better than experience.  Lid down GENTLY, check.  Couple you you guys are breaking my heart here.  You want me to cut a notch in my shiney brand new Weber Kettle???  

   I'm also sure it would probably cause a divorce as my lovely wife bought it for my birthday, ( or I may lose some VERY important parts ).  

  Just for the sake of asking, ( maybe I could do it while she is out shopping ) do you then just leave the bare metal, spray paint it, or is there a better coating out there?  Just worried about it starting to rust.  The coating is just one reason you buy a Weber, not to mention overall build quality.   I welded for almost 20 yrs. so I know how quickly bare metal starts to rust.  Thanks again for the thoughts and ideas.  Keep smokin!
