I am trying different ways of lighting pellets in a tube.

Torch is okay. Would like an alternative. I know I'll not have a tank at the worst time!

Tried soaking some in isopropyl alcohol about 10 minutes and that seemed to give off way to much smoke for a quite a while.

Tried vaseline cotton ball. That seemed to be better than the alcohol, but I wonder about any byproduct lingering for taste issues.

I think on this forum someone mentioned Perrel hand gel. Haven't tried it yet.

I always use a torch . Last a long time . Some guys use the smaller butane torch .
I have a nephew that uses an electric soldering iron . I never tried it but seems like it works .

Purel is basically isopropyl alcohol and aloe gel mixed together, Id avoid it esp based on your above statement

What about an electric soldering iron, odd but that would be small enough to fit in the tube. Not sure if it would get hot enough to ignite the pellets though

MAP Pro user too. I use it for starting my other charcoal smokers, and with some hobby metal working, so I always have a spare or two.

torch.jpg Works every time and lasts a long time....

I was using Mapp/Propane and still have some in reserve. These days I prefer using a Butane kitchen torch. A bit smaller flame to heat the pellets and not so much the tray and all.

When I first got mine. It came with their gelled alcohol starter that worked good. But I just use a propane torch like most others.

I use a propane torch like most of the others. I ran out a few weeks ago, like you worried about, and I had to improvise, and it didn't work out for me. So now I keep an extra tank in stock.
