Wallyworld wood chips?

I lost my head and got a small bag of mesquite chips at wallyworld last weekend. I figured for $1.97 why not...

A couple of days later I was making a roto chicken on the gasser, and thought I'd add a couple of smoke packs as I've done many times before... usually works OK... but this time there was absolutely NOTHING! The chips were reduced to ash just as I expected, but no smoke imparted to the bird at all! How the heck is this possible? Does wood ever lose it's flavor?

It's not like I'm gonna be getting any more chips there or anything... I'm just curious if anyone else has had anything like this happen.
 
I have done that before, was cooking a butt and I guess temps were too high for them , chips burned up with no smoke or very little. I just stick to chunks in the GOSM. I do use chips to compliment whatever chunks I am using but I soak them for awhile, they last longer that way.
