I would like to build a V shaped fire management basket. My question is how do I know what size to make it?

First thing would be be a little smaller then the opening

I made mine also... 8" wide at bottom... a couple of inches short on the depth of firebox... height doesn't matter as long as it fits in firebox ... as far as the angle of the sides... I just went with what looked like a good angle...

Do you have any picks of your basket?

You can use 2 separate plates and just lay them in the box in a "V" shaped configuration. The top of each plate would rest against the front and back side of the firebox and they will come together at the bottom. They don't need to be welded together. I use the method I saw here... .

Fast forward to about the 5 minute mark. It's a different smoker, but the technique will work on others.

To those who weld is it ok to use old bed frames to build a fire basket as I know certain types of metals give off dangerous gases when heated?

Well here is how it turned out
