Hi Members

I am a new member here. I have done a little smoking iin the past and am keen to start doing some more.

I have made a smoker box for a 4 draw file cabinet.

If you have a look over the picture i think i have covered all the requirements for building a smoker.

i would love some options on what you all think of this and if you can see anything that might give my trouble in the future.

thanks

Sean

Looks good.

Cold or hot smoking? If hot smoking where is the heat coming from?

Is the metal save to hot smoke with?

I will be hot smoking, i know nothing about cold smoking as of yet.

I am picking up a burning today and will set this onto the floor and tap the pipe out the side.

Once this has been set into place and i will the the burning to make sure all contaminates have been removed.

From what i have seen on the internet file cabinets can be used as hot smokers, this should be ok i hope :/

Nice work:  my only concern is whether the primer and paint on the file cabinet can hold up to heat, without degenerating or producing something unsafe for food products like c farmer had mentioned.  You certainly don't want to sicken anyone with something that could be avoided.  My $0.02.

Thankyou :)

i am a little concerned about that also, my plan is to do 4 x 6hr test burns to try to clear any toxins from the box before any food enters it.

fingers crossed this will clear any.

i am exspecting the paint to burn off when burning this in...

Hopefully the steel will withstand a long, high temp burn without it compromising the material, seams, etc.  Might also look at some type of safe paint stripper before you fire it up:  you might be the one who ends up sickened if the melting/burning paint isn't safe to inhale.  Good luck!

Lots of file cabinet smokers out there. You will want to either grind or burn the outer paint off. Then repaint with high temp paint, exterior only.

Cool thanks for all the tips, they all are helping thank you.
Put the burner in today too.

Have I said this has costed me $5 so far completed
I
Just put the burners in too...

Nice job. I'm thinking you might want to add a heat deflector over the burner.

I also see that there's no insulation. This could cause a problem when smoking in cold weather. A welding blanket to wrap around it might not be a bad investment.
