I see dozens of people have built an UDS here.
Just kind of wondered, being new, how an UDS out performs a Pit Barrel? What advantages does an Ugly Drum have besides cost?

Johnny B

Don't think they out-perform and UDS... they are basically identical... except for maybe air intake...   55 gal. drum...  charcoal basket...   racks... lid...

Seems like it can hang more meat than ugly drum holds and maybe easier to set up and move food around.. takes up less space.

Pretty much one in the same. If you are not handy and have to buy a Pit Barrel is a good option. If you are handy and can get a non lined drum ( I hate lined drums lol) build your own. :)

I love my UDS.

Yes they are bout the same thing.  Pitbarrel doesnt have adjustable vents I dont think.

No tools or time here.. just wondered if I got a pit barrel , if I would look like a dummy for spending the cash.. Lol, it's to much for me to have a 55 gal at my apartment.. [emoji]129299[/emoji]

I guess the vent at the bottom you set open depending on altitude where you are. The top vents are where the rods are stuck through. It has a Weber handle style rack that you can also insert ..

I guess everyone says it cooks evenly, despite how meat hangs close to the coals sometimes.. it's still same temps circulating in the barrel from top to bottom.

I seen alot of pit barrel cooks. They all look good. How does the meat close to the fire not burn?

Can you use a rotisserie on it.? I love spinning meat on the uds.

I guess the heat inside the pit barrel rotates fast enough to keep it off the lower hanging pieces.. Lol I seen a few big name YouTube guy's doing cooks. They seem to like it . Meat shrinks up in the cook too.. that helps . I don't think they have a mod like for a wsm to attach a rotisserie. It's not as common as the Weber or drums that are 55 gal it's an odd size.. smaller diameter

Pulling your leg ???? I rotisserie on mine all the time.

Oh.. is that auto rotating? Like a ribomatic? Or you sit and turn like 1890 western fire cook?
