Well there isnt a category for deserts so here we go.

Double click on the link. This is one goofy hosting site. Any suggestions, I did Photobucket and the advertising is so frequent you can't use the site. In the smoker, this comes out with a pizza flavor added.

4 tomatoes, peeled and sliced
10 fresh basil leaves, chopped
1/2 cup chopped green onion
1 (9-inch) prebaked deep dish pie shell
1 cup grated mozzarella
1 cup grated cheddar
1 cup mayonnaise
Salt and pepper

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Place the tomatoes in a colander in the sink in 1 layer. Sprinkle with salt and allow to drain for 10 minutes.

Layer the tomato slices, basil, and onion in pie shell. Season with salt and pepper. Combine the grated cheeses and mayonnaise together. Spread mixture on top of the tomatoes and bake for 30 minutes or until lightly browned.

To serve, cut into slices and serve warm.

Welcome! Looks delicious! I've heard of tomato pies for a long time and they have always looked and sounded good. I think this will push me to make one in the next week or so. Do you use Miracle Whip or real mayonnaise?

Wow that tomato pie has piqued my interest!!!! That looks great and sounds interesting. I want to try it. Thx for posting this. Like for sure and welcome to SMF.

No, there isn't a Desert forum, but there is a Dessert forum.

Why would this go in that forum anyways?
More suitable for Veggies or Side Items.
I didn't see a category for side items but it's a pie, not a tomato. Tomato is just an ingredient.

Miracle Whip or Mayo, your preference. I just stayed true to te recipe.

Yes, it's a pie, but not everything in pastry is a dessert.
Is a deep dish pizza a pie?
Technically it is, and tomato is just an ingredient.
This is more a meatless deep dish pizza pie, but a dessert it is not.

Granted there are savory items that can be catagorized as a dessert, but in general they're still sweet-n-savory... Emphasis on sweet.
Quiche is a pie, sweet-n-savory at times, but it's still either an entree or side... Emphasis on savory.
But it can for sure be made into a dessert when done more as a sweet custard.
But then is it really still a quiche?

This kind of discussion isn't for everyone though, I like to talk food too much sometimes, sorry.

Gee all this time I've been screwing up and eating it for dessert. Oh well, sorry if I offended anybody.

It's your pie, your meal, you eat it how you please.
You've offended no one, certainly not I.

Don't mind me, I'm just quibbling over semantics... Even if you're not playing along.

My wife loves to eat dessert first... And afterwards too if she can get away with it.
So is it really dessert if eaten first, or is it now an appetizer or simply the first course?
By definition it is no longer dessert since it is no longer a sweet confectionaery conclusion of the meal.

I put all pizza - based configurations in the "Blowing Smoke Around The Smoker" section.

Has anyone actually been to the ORIGINAL "Tomato Pie" restaurant where the first pizzas were invented? It is in New Haven, Ct. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Pepe_Pizzeria_Napoletana is the link to the original 'tomato pie'. We have friends who live in New Haven, Ct., and they took us there to enjoy the tomato pies - wood-fired ovens, huge tomato pies, waitresses in their 60's and 70's serving them, etc. A long line waiting to get in and served!

Welcome we also make tomato pie our recipe as with so many is a bit different than yours but the results is fantastic. Ours uses shredded Parmesan cheese.

TOMATO PIE!!!

People look at me like I'm nuts when I mention tomato pie.

I've been making them for years. I started out with the exact recipe mentioned above, then gradually tweaked it along the way.

Now I go heavy on the basil, cheese/mayonnaise, and add some Italian sausage. (I rinse as much juice out of them as I can. Too much juice makes for a soggy crust)

You can call it pie, deep dish pizza, whatever. It is pretty tasty!!

My tomatoes are coming on like crazy. I see a pie (2 or 3) in my near future.

So I am going to do this for dinner, or at least get it cooked today...but Uh, if my smoker only goes to 275f <MES electric> ..should I just do this right in the oven?

Also should I prebake the pie crusts for this or no?
