Thinking about 36" Blackstone Modification

I have a couple year old 36" Blackstone I've been using a lot. To me both side batwing shelves are pretty much useless, wind changes and what ever is on them gets really too hot from burner exhaust heating what ever is there. I have used the clamp on scraper wind guards with a little success, but also messy. Any one tried moving the batwing shelf mounts down 4-5 inches on each side? Heat exiting the sides would have more airspace to flow upward, existing oval cutouts would provide air for additional upward air flow also.

Unless I can hear of or find anything negative, I plan to give this a try soon. Any comments would be appreciated.

Good morning, I have the same problem, there are a lot of breezy nights where we are in Hudson, Florida. What I have been doing is to just put a couple of bricks on each side along the inside edge of the shelf. Seems work pretty well. Joe inHudson

I have used heavy foil to block the wind- but it’s more to keep the heat on the Blackstone rather than to block or protect the shelf. None the less it works both ways and is easy

Thumbing through old stuff here and realize I did not give an update on my post about lowering my 36" Blackstone bat wings.

Mine is sitting on a narrow concrete deck area and only gets moved back and forth a few feet a couple times to scoot over about 4 ft to get under an overhang when I think I might have rain. On the tank end I removed the useless handle that can not be accessed because the tank is the way of dropping the batwing to get to it. Swivel wheels and handle should be on opposite end. I might fix that some day. Back to my post. I removed the 4 screws to try to slide the mount down but mount was kinda wappy jaw drilled but I put it lower using the 2 lower mount holes for the top screws of the batwing thinking I would redrill and put a new bolt if I needed for the extra second bolt support. After a year of usage, me forgetting about checking if I needed an extra bolt, it is still work fine for using the batwing for my short moves. The batwing actually keeps the mounts aligned. I only gained about two inches, but it does make a big difference, I can put a flat cookie sheet pan ready to take stuff off the griddle on the batwing without it over heating. I would suspect Blackstone has revised this on newer units. I will take a look next time I see a display set up.

Another little tip, my concrete out to my wood deck is sloped from the front of my cook surface to the back drain where I use it. I leveled the grilling top by raising up the cooking surface and putting a couple SS 1/4 in fender washers on each side pin where it sits on the frame. Keeps bacon grease where I want it and not trying to run out the drain hole. Anyone else have some easy mods?
