As for the zero clearance on the saw blade.
I had one made of that White stuff (HDPE I think).
Had no slot in it.
Just lower blade down, set it place and raise blade up through it.
Keeping body parts out of the way as you raise blade, of course.

Woodcraft & Rockler would have them.
Another place, in Atlanta I think, but can't remember the name.

I'll call this a successful failure. I did one weave on this. Then made a bone head move by attempting to plane off the excess walnut trim. Which was high on both sides of the board with the power planer. Needless to say, that didn't work well. Spund the board around. Got jammed and chewed up the board pretty good. After planing down by hand. Then running through the planer to get rid of a couple nasty snipes. I ended up with a board a touch over 1/2" Still a nice looking board. Just not what I was attempting.

I was gonna mention to wait until you're done with all the weaves to plane it down , so it doesn't get to thin . Best lessons learned .
power planer.
Best place for that , is in the box ! Lol . I use a chisel and hand pressure just to clean it up enough for a sander .
Gonna do another weave ? If it gets to thin , it's pizza peel time .

Forgot to say it looks good . Did you buy some of that Watco food grade finish ?
That stuff comes out nice for food related / non cutting stuff .

With power planer. I meant the dewalt. Sorry. I tried those hand powered planers before. Didn't like it! I'm definately going to do more weave. I really like how it looks. I have the Watco finish. Forgot about it. I should have used that for the butcher twine holder.

OK , got ya .
I try to keep the strip flush to one side when I glue it up . Right before you cinch it down , give it a tap with a mallet or a block of wood and a hammer . That way you can take another cut from the flat side .

That Watco is great for stuff that won't see a knife , but needs to be food safe .

Got tired of using a hammer. And a piece of scrap wood to hammer on. So I whipped up a mallet.

Came out ok. Considering I just used scrap pieces of cutting boards. Reinforced with dowels. I think it'll hold up alright. Productive weekend. Three boards done.

Yup . That's a must have . Some guys really get into those and fancy them up . Yours is right there too . Looks great . You'll use that a lot . Mines a hunk of a Redbud branch that blew of my Mom's tree .

Cool . I got another night stand started in Maple , but thinking about doing a few more cutting boards . Might be a good year for selling stuff for the holidays with prices being so high .
