Jeff say's the rub will cover about 2 racks of spares. I don't know if I've ever made "one" batch. I usually double or triple the recipe. If it is weak then add more. I usually cover the meat so I cant see it anymore, then add a tad more.

It depends on how thick you like you rub. It you put it on really thick and wait awhile it almost turns into a sauce all by itself. I like to go lighter than most and add more rub after about an hour or so. I make about a gallon at a time, but I use it for alot of things not just smoking meat.
 
OK so I havent used Jeffs rub ... YET

I use my own rub. My point is that I rub quite heavy & include the rub in a vinegar & beer based mop sauce, I mop the meat every hour with the mop sauce thereby adding more rub & moisture ever hour
