Got up this morning at 4am and went right to work on salsa and hot sauces. We just expanded into this market and have 4 launches scheduled this week. Got done with a batch of one of the new release salsas and one of the new release hot sauces. Feel accomplished but beat...wife isn't sure how I manage to do it. I work a normal full time 40 hr/week job, run our spice business that started off small but we've expanded into dips, salsas, sauces, and merch that we do all ourselves, as well as our other laser engraving business and coach my daughter's soccer team. I run on about 3 hours of sleep a day, which I know probably isn't great for my health but I just have a hard time shutting my brain down and going to sleep. Anyone else like this, and how do you balance things and get decent sleep?

Nope.

If the income from your spice/salsa business is 100% necessary beyond your 40 hour/week job to survive then I feel for you but if it's not then ditch the baggage and get some sleep.

Not necessary but I really enjoy it. Even if I wasn't doing it, I still wouldn't be able to sleep, I'd just find something else to occupy my mind with that would keep me from sleeping.

I am not the oldest guy on this site but I'm sure as hell not the youngest. If you feel the need to occupy almost every moment of your life being awake you will pay for it from a health stand point. Ditch what is unnecessary in your life and focus on the necessary so that you can live and enjoy the time you have.

Only option I see is sell your daughter, that will cut back on a few hrs.
😂 just kidding, but you may need to wind down a little or it may end up biting you in the butt. What is more your passion, the salsa business or the engraving ? Your wife has a good point

Going rate for a pre-teen with an attitude problem?

....asking for a friend.

Pfffft. Ask any parent with a newborn :emoji_wink:
This ^^^^^!!
Met my 3 week old granddaughter for the first time this weekend... her sleep schedule isn't the best so we helped out so her parents could get some sleep... it was much easier when I was 20!

If you enjoy it, then it makes a difference. Years ago dad worked at a packing plant and farmed. Also delivered mail part time as a substitute rural mail carrier. Main carrier got cancer, and couldn't do the job anymore... but dad wasn't guaranteed to get the job full time. So he had to keep working nights at the pack, and delivered mail during the day. He got maybe 4 hours a night. Asked him after some years how he did it... he replied... didn't have a choice. He's 89 now, still helps with the farming.

I'm with you most nights get 0-3 hours of sleep maybe once a week I'll get about 6 not all at once but total for the night. Mine is more health related so not by choice haven't slept for over 3 hours straight in years usually more like 1-1.5 hours at a time

I say if you enjoy it and it's your passion keep getting after it. The salsa will never turn from hobby to career of you take your foot off of the gas.
As Ryan said, that business is your newborn and requires a lot of attention.
You do what you have /want to do.
I'm hitting 65 in July and have no plans to slow down. Don't sleep much now and will be even less if or when I can manage to turn my passion into a 2nd career.
Have hopes to do some BBQ pop-ups, more comps and start a food truck.
Don't give up what makes you happy.
But what do I know.....

Keith

I don't sleep well, and work all the time. But the best thing I learned was to make sure I set aside time for the family. Other than that, keep grinding. You'll know if its time to slow down... no rest for the wicked 👍

Off topic I'm sorry. That man is exactly how my mind works (FYI 46 end of June). There is a job, it needs to be done, I'm on it. Drives my wife insane and annoys little a man bit but it's a job, my job, it's gotta be done.

It's really more on me not being able to just shut down and relax, feel like I always need to be doing something and my brain is always trying to stay 3 steps ahead. Having you brain constantly running at mach 3 makes sleep very difficult.

I get it. As a life working in the drilling industry I could tell y'all things you would find hard to believe but I know they're true. I have been so sleep deprived I lost color in my vision (real story.) I've spent 2 week hitches and never sleep in a bed (Pick up, couches, & floors) Bottom line, get rest. Don't be like Randy cause I'm only 63 years old and paying the price for abusing my body.
