Temp problem with masterbuilt 30" electric smoker

Smoker is 3 years old and failed me for the first time. Set temp at 230 as usual. After 2 and half hours I CHECKED and digital readout showed 300. I checked and set temp was at 230. I was doing my first prime packer and didn't want to babysit all night. Well good thing I CHECKED. Has this happened to anyone else? I done many 18 smokes with no problems. Thanks

What was the actual smoker temp?  The digital thermometer may have gone wacky, but I didn't think electrics could get that high in temp.
