Have always started my lump in a chimny and waited for ash - over before adding , something I had always done with briqs before I started using lump and wood. Will adding raw lump or wood impart a nasty taste ? Never actually tried but dont hurt to ask, maybe dumb question but I'm not known for being the sharpest knife in the drawer ( gonna start the 5 week course , maybe my question will be answered there ) thankx for tips in advance !

It's a 5 day course... but no rush ;{) I either pre-burn my wood chunks or add lit lump, depending on what I need. Smoke or heat, respectivly.
