Haven't read anything negative about lump but these days everything is bad. I like the consistancy and cheeper cost with briquets, but haven't thought about switching back

I've stopped buying lump and just going with B&B briquettes. They're so easy to find, decent price, & I get a lot more manageability with the briquettes over lump.

I've only a little experience with lump, but I gravitated back to briquettes since they just seem more consistent; measuring, lighting, burning... And I really like Kingsford Professional; when Costco has it on sale, I stock up!

I stopped using briquette a number of years ago around the covid time. I felt the quality really went down. The heat wasn't there for a good sear as I only use kettles.
I agree lump is harder to manage heat for offset in a kettle or for the WSM users.
Lump has very little ash compared to briquette ash and filler residue. Briquettes use filler (usually crushed limestone) to regulate heat.
I feel the cost with briquette is higher than lump. I can reuse the left over lump chips after smothering the coals. I don't reuse smothered briquette.

I don't like the smell of most lump when starting up or if you add to a existing fire.
My wife recently told me she doesn't prefer the flavor off lump and wants me to go back to briquette.
I have 3-4 bags of various brands of briquettes in the garage to use up this summer.
I will do a blind taste test with my wife. The bags of briquettes are relatively new so maybe past the covid crap products.

Briquettes for grilling duty like my kettle, also for starting the offset( then just splits) or starting the open pit. Nothing but lump in the Primo for lower ash.
